Other Uses. Large quantities of hydrocarbon resins are used in mastics, caulks, and sealants (qv). Polymers for these adhesive products include neoprene, butyl mbber, polyisoprene, NR, SBR, polyisobutylene, acryHcs, polyesters, polyamides, amorphous polypropylene, and block copolymers. These adhesives may be solvent or water-borne and usually contain inorganic fillers. [Pg.358]

Blends of isobutylene polymers with thermoplastic resins are used for toughening these compounds. High density polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene are often modified with 5 to 30 wt % polyisobutylene. At higher elastomer concentration the blends of butyl-type polymers with polyolefins become more mbbery in nature, and these compositions are used as thermoplastic elastomers (98). There has been an enormous technological interest in tertfa/j-butanol (tBA) dehydration during the past thirty years, first as a primary route to methyl te/f-butyl ether (MTBE) (1) and more recently for the production of isooctane and polyisobutylene (2). A number of commercializable processes have been developed for isobutylene manufacture (eq 1) in both the USA and Japan (3,4). These processes typically involve either vapor-phase tBA dehydration over a silica-alumina catalyst at 260-370°C, or liquid-phase processing utilizing either homogenous (sulfonic acid), or solid acid catalysis (e.g. acidic cationic resins). Standard Oil Co. claims the use of polyisobutylene as a plasticizer for polyvinyl acetate. Copolymers of isobutylene with vinyl ethers and other monomers are mentioned in several patents. For synthetic rubbers, oligomers of butadiene are claimed. Rubberlike polyolefins (10 to 50% is sufficient) are used extensively for plasticizing phenolic resins to increase impact strength. [Pg.97]

Bulyk. Butyl-based materials are sold in the form of preformed tapes, thermoplastic hot melts, and one-part solvent-releasing sealants. Butyl polymers are made by the copolymerization of 97-98 mol % isobutylene with 2-3% isoprene. Another butyl-based polymer, polyisobutylene, is produced by the polymerization of isobutylene. Formulations of butyl-based sealants also include plasticizer, filler, and lackifier resins. Poly butenes are common plasticizers for butyl sealants. Solvents, such as mineral spirits, are used for the one-part solvent-releasing formulations. As the solvent leaves the typical one-part butyl, the sealant hardens and loses its elastomeric ability. This limits the use of solvents to low movement applications where durability is not of high concern. [Pg.1463]

Butyl Rubber. Butyl rubber is used in conjunction with other thermoplastic hydrocarbon rubbers (for example, polyisobutylene) to make pressure-sensitive hot-melt adhesives. Such formulations include also tackifying resins and oils. Adhesives of low viscosity are produced, and these may be applied by the hot-melt spray technique (see page 106). [Pg.98]
