Plastic Sheet. Poly(methyl methacrylate) plastic sheet is manufactured in a wide variety of types, including cleat and colored transparent, cleat and colored translucent, and colored semiopaque. Various surface textures ate also produced. Additionally, grades with improved weatherabiUty (added uv absorbers), mat resistance, crazing resistance, impact resistance, and flame resistance ate available. Automotive appHcations account for about 116,000 t of woddwide consumption aimuaHy, with appHcations for various components including headlamp assembHes, interior instmment panels, bumpers, etc. Many automotive appHcations use blends of polycarbonate with acrylonitrile—butadiene—styrene (ABS) or with poly(butylene terephthalate) (PBT) (see Acrylonitrile polymers). Both large and smaH appHances also account for large markets for polycarbonate. Consumption is about 54,000 t aimuaHy. Cured phenolics are universally brittle in nature. This is true of both resoles and novolacs and does not depend much on the source of methylene used to promote cure. Consequently, the fillers used in molded articles are highly important to the design of the manufactured product. With resoles, the fiber or filler are usually the primary component of the final composite, with the resole acting as a binder or impregnating agent. With novolacs the resin may be the major component in the molded part. Poly-silanes and other organic polymers are also added in some applications to promote impact resistance and toughness [192]. [Pg.925]

Thermoplastic polymers, such as poly(styrene) may be filled with soft elastomeric particles in order to improve their impact resistance. The elastomer of choice is usually butadiene-styrene, and the presence of common chemical groups in the matrix and the filler leads to improved adhesion between them. The heat distortion temperature of impact-resistant polystyrene may also be improved by polymer blends. Those of impact-resistant polystyrene with poly-2,5-dimethylphenylene-1,4-oxide (PPO) are particularly interesting (90). Polystyrene and PPO are molecularly compatible and mixtures of them have glass transition temperatures which vary virtually linearly with composition. High-impact polystyrene (HIPS) is produced by polymerizing styrene in the presence of a rubber, usually poly(l,3-butadiene). HIPS has improved impact resistance compared to polystyrene and competes with ABS products at low-cost end applications such as fast-food cups, lids, takeout containers, toys, kitchen appliances, and personal-care product containers. The usefulness of piperazine and its derivatives for the preparation of polyamides has been known for some time, and it is one of the few disecondary diamines which can be employed to prepare high-melting polycondensates. Piperazine polyamides are especially useful as hot melt adhesives (68USP3377303), since they display unusually good adhesion to vinyl-based polymers such as poly(vinyl chloride). Acrylonitrile-styrene-acrylate (ASA) constitutes a versatile member of the group of styrenic copolymers used for housings, covers and other applications which require excellent surface appearance and environmental stability combined with high impact resistance and stiffness. Aside textile and packaging applications the use of PET (Poly(ethylene Terephthalate) for structural applications is rather limited compared to equivalent polymers such as polyamides. Two main reasons can be given. Firstly, the high sensitivity of PET toward hydrolysis and its slow crystallisation kinetics constrain its processing. Secondly, its low glass transition temperature constrains its use if amorphous, whereas its weak impact resistance if semicrystalline constrains its use when crystallised. The industrial objective of this work deals with the latter of these points increasing the impact resistance of semi-crystalline PET. [Pg.65]

Resinous modifiers. Epoxy resins have the ability to interact with other resins to form heteropolymers. These are also known as plastic alloys. Improved properties can be achieved with modified systems which are otherwise not possible with a single resin for example epoxies can form plastic alloys with poly(vinyl formal) to improve the impact resistance and peel strength of adhesive formulations. [Pg.38]
