The protonated form of poly(vinyl amine) (PVAm—HCl) has two advantages over many cationic polymers high cationic charge densities are possible and the pendent primary amines have high reactivity. It has been appHed in water treatment, paper making, and textiles (qv). The protonated forms modified with low molecular weight aldehydes are usehil as fines and filler retention agents and are in use with recycled fibers. As with all new products, unexpected appHcations, such as in clear antiperspirants, have been found. It is usehil in many metal complexation appHcations (49). [Pg.320]

The many commercially attractive properties of acetal resins are due in large part to the inherent high crystallinity of the base polymers. Values reported for percentage crystallinity (x ray, density) range from 60 to 77%. The lower values are typical of copolymer. Poly oxymethylene most commonly crystallizes in a hexagonal unit cell (9) with the polymer chains in a 9/5 helix (10,11). An orthorhombic unit cell has also been reported (9). The oxyethylene units in copolymers of trioxane and ethylene oxide can be incorporated in the crystal lattice (12). The nominal value of the melting point of homopolymer is 175°C, that of the copolymer is 165°C. Other thermal properties, which depend substantially on the crystallization or melting of the polymer, are Hsted in Table 1. See also reference 13. [Pg.56]

The beater additive process starts with a very dilute aqueous slurry of fibrous nitrocellulose, kraft process woodpulp, and a stabilizer such as diphenylamine in a felting tank. A solution of resin such as poly(vinyl acetate) is added to the slurry of these components. The next step, felting, involves use of a fine metal screen in the shape of the inner dimensions of the final molded part. The screen is lowered into the slurry. A vacuum is appHed which causes the fibrous materials to be deposited on the form. The form is pulled out after a required thickness of felt is deposited, and the wet, low density felt removed from the form. The felt is then molded in a matched metal mold by the appHcation of heat and pressure which serves to remove moisture, set the resin, and press the fibers into near final shape (180—182). [Pg.53]

The Fe, Co, and Ni deposits are extremely fine grained at high current density and pH. Electroless nickel, cobalt, and nickel—cobalt alloy plating from fluoroborate-containing baths yields a deposit of superior corrosion resistance, low stress, and excellent hardenabiUty (114). Lead is plated alone or ia combination with tin, iadium, and antimony (115). Sound iasulators are made as lead—plastic laminates by electrolyticaHy coating Pb from a fluoroborate bath to 0.5 mm on a copper-coated nylon or polypropylene film (116) (see Insulation, acoustic). Steel plates can be simultaneously electrocoated with lead and poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (117). Solder is plated ia solutioas containing Pb(Bp4)2 and Sn(Bp4)2 thus the lustrous solder-plated object is coated with a Pb—Sn alloy (118). [Pg.168]

The equimolar copolymer of ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene is isomeric with poly(vinyhdene fluoride) but has a higher melting point (16,17) and a lower dielectric loss (18,19) (see Fluorine compounds, organic-poly(VINYLIDENE fluoride)). A copolymer with the degree of alternation of about 0.88 was used to study the stmcture (20). Its unit cell was determined by x-ray diffraction. Despite irregularities in the chain stmcture and low crystallinity, a unit cell and stmcture was derived that gave a calculated crystalline density of 1.9 g/cm. The unit cell is befleved to be orthorhombic or monoclinic (a = 0.96 nm, b = 0.925 nm, c = 0.50 nm 7 = 96%. [Pg.365]

Extmsion processes have been used to produce high and low density flexible cellular poly(vinyl chloride). A decomposable blowiag ageat is usually bleaded with the compouad prior to extmsioa. The compouaded resia is thea fed to an extmder where it is melted under pressure and forced out of an orifice iato the atmosphere. Structural Components. In most appHcations stmctural foam parts are used as direct replacements for wood, metals, or soHd plastics and find wide acceptance in appHances, automobUes, furniture, materials-handling equipment, and in constmction. Use in the huil ding and constmction industry account for more than one-half of the total volume of stmctural foam appHcations. High impact polystyrene is the most widely used stmctural foam, foUowed by polypropylene, high density polyethylene, and poly(vinyl chloride). The constmction industry offers the greatest growth potential for ceUular plastics. [Pg.416]

Properties of PET Molding Resins. The fliU crystal stmcture of poly(ethylene terephthalate) has been estabhshed by x-ray diffraction (134—137). It forms triclinic crystals with one polymer chain per unit cell. The original cell parameters were estabhshed in 1954 (134) and numerous groups have re-examined it over the years. Cell parameters are a = 0.444 nm, b = 0.591 nm, and c = 1.067 nm a = 100°, (3 = 117°, and 7 = 112° and density = 1.52 g/cm. One difficulty is determining when crystallinity is fliUy developed. In the early 1950s, Ziegler observed that certain heterogeneous catalysts based on transition metals polymerized ethylene to a linear, high density material at modest pressures and temperatures. Natta showed that these catalysts also could produce highly stereospecific poly-a-olefins, notably isotactic polypropylene, and polydienes. They shared the 1963 Nobel Prize in chemistry for their work. [Pg.437]

The effect of a second polymer blended with PPS which causes enhanced nucleation of PPS has been previously observed.
