Low-boy trailers are used for truck movement of ISO containers. Low center of gravity trailers are also available for tanks. The lower center of gravity reduces the risk of a turnover. Baffles can be used in large containers to improve stability. Nonbrittle containers can be used to improve resistance to impact or shock damage. [Pg.95]

The first move in this direction was to improve the weatherability of impact-resistant polystyrene. Because polybutadiene, the most widely used rubber in impact-resistant polystyrene, is unsaturated, it is sensitive to photooxidation, and impact-resistant polystyrene is therefore not suitable for outdoor applications. A saturated rubber might be able to help here. In the ABS sector this has been successfully tried out with acrylate rubber (77) and EPDM (78, 79), and the latter has also been used in impact-resistant polystyrene (80, 81) This development has elicited satisfactory responses only in certain areas and more work still has to be done. For instance, attempts have been made to improve resistance to weathering by using silicone rubber (82 ). This approach is effective, but economic factors still stand in its way. So why aren t today s engines made of ceramics The short answer is that, unlike metals, ceramics cannot bend and deform to absorb impacts. Intense research is currently under way to solve the problem of ceramic brittleness, with some success. Wollastonite is not yet used in commercial WPC materials, but it is currently under investigation to further enhance the properties of WPCs. The mineral is used worldwide in many plastic applications providing improvement in stiffness, impact, scratch resistance, lower thermal coefficient of expansion-contraction, and flame retardancy. The unique morphology of wollastonite and the variety size grades available can provide benefits that are not obtained by other minerals. In a number of cases, wollastonite has successfully replaced talc in plastic applications where further improvements in properties such as greater strength and improved scratch resistance were required. [Pg.147]

Polypropylene (PP) is often blended with ethylene/propylene (BP) rubbers to improve the impact resistance. This so-called toughened PP (TPP) can be a mechanically blended PP/C2C3 rubber system or an in-situ polymerised PP/C2C3 rubber system. A number of rubber parameters (like concentration, particle size, particle size distribution, crystallinity, molecular weight etc.) determine the ultimate effect of the rubber addition on the impact resistance. DMA is one of the analytical techniques often used to investigate blends of polymers with an impact improver. The determination of the relation between the area of the rubber relaxation maximum as measured by DMA and the rubber concentration is usually a first step in such an investigation.
