Their boiling points increase with the number of carbon atoms. For molecules of low carbon numbers, the addition of a carbon increases the boiling point about 25°C. Further additions result in a smaller increase. The density increases with the molecular weight 0.626 kg/1 for pentane which has 5 atoms of carbon, 0.791 kg/1 for pentacosane which has 25 carbon atoms, but the density is always much lower than 1. 

Improving the cetane number by additives results in better engine behavior, as would be predicted by the combustion mechanisms in the diesel engine (noise reduction, better operating characteristics, particularly when cold). Equation V-64 is that of a parabola, and electrocapillary curves are indeed approximately parabolic in shape. Because E ax tmd 7 max very nearly the same for certain electrolytes, such as sodium sulfate and sodium carbonate, it is generally assumed that specific adsorption effects are absent, and Emax is taken as a constant (-0.480 V) characteristic of the mercury-water interface. For most other electrolytes there is a shift in the maximum voltage, and is then taken to be Emax 0.480. Some values for the quantities are given in Table V-5 [113]. Much information of this type is due to Gouy [125], although additional results are to be found in most of the other references cited in this section.

Precipitation is effected in dilute solution and the reagent is added slowly and with thorough stirring. The slow addition results in the first particles precipitated acting as nuclei which grow as further material precipitates.

A general conclusion regarding H2 adsorption on alkali modified metal surfaces is that alkali addition results in a pronounced decrease of the dissociation adsorption rate of hydrogen as well as of the saturation coverage. 

Two additional results were noted during this series of experiments. It was found that plugging of the reactor occurred when the conversion reached about 60%. No satisfactory explanation or cause for the plugging was determined. It was also noted that, regardless of the rate of polymerization, no further reaction occurred after a period of about 60 to 75 minutes.
