The deleterious effects of catalyst poisoning when carrying out asymmetric hydrogenations at low catalyst loading caimot be overemphasised. In order to eliminate the possibility that the substrate synthesis introduced inhibitory impurities, an alternative synthetic protocol was examined (Scheme 7.4).
