Synthetic organic pesticides

Toxic Organic Materials. The term toxic organics iacludes synthetic organic compounds such as pesticides, herbicides, PCBs, and chlotinated hydrocarbons, usually produced by the manufacturers and formulators of these products. 

The host of new synthetic organic pesticides presents a variety of problems to the practicing physician because of the lack of basic fundamental information on these chemicals. The American Medical Association has organized a committee on pesticides to consider the following problems of economic poisons and to coordinate information and make it available to physicians and other interested persons or groups safe standards of use, development of prophylactic and antidotal measures, voluntary industry controls, standardization of nomenclature, and professional and public education.

Bipyridyls A group of synthetic organic pesticides which includes the herbicide Paraquat. Blasting Agents Any material or mixture consisting of fuel and oxidizer intended for blasting, not otherwise defined as an explosive. 

Nitrophenols Synthetic organic pesticides containing carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen used as wood preservatives, fungicides, or disinfectants affect liver and central nervous system in the human body. 

Organophosphate Synthetic organic pesticides that contain carbon, hydrogen, and phosphorous highly toxic to humans as they prevent proper transmission of nerve impulses.

Organohalide compounds were the first of the widely used synthetic organic pesticides. In this section organohalide insecticides are discussed, and in Section 16.6 other pesticides of the organohalide chemical type are covered. 

By 1950, synthetic organic pesticides had emerged as the effective new products of choice in the marketplace. The organochlorine insecticides such as aldrin, dieldrin, chlordane, heptachlor, lindane, endrin, toxaphene, and DDT were highly effective in controlling insects at very low dosages. 

The organic pesticides contain carbon. They also contain hydrogen and often oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, or other elements. Most pesticides used today are organic compounds. A few organic pesticides are either derived or extracted directly from plants. Most, however, are synthetic compounds. It is these compounds that have been responsible for the expanded use of pesticides since World War II. They are often extremely effective and easy to use, have been relatively lowcost and some are quite specific in their activity. They have, however, been the principal focus of health and environmental concerns and are the pesticides most commonly associated with problems of pesticide use and misuse.

The use of pesticides has received intense scrutiny for generations. The concern about residues in food and potential adverse health effects predates the advent of synthetic organic pesticides in the late 1940 s (1).
