Pilot/demonstration project

Norsk Hydro in co-operation with Enercon developed a combined wind and hydrogen energy system as a pilot demonstration project on the island of Utsira, whose municipality has an ambition to be self-supplied with renewable energy (Eide et al., 2004).

A major project — the Marquette Interchange in Madison, Wisconsin — has been used as a pilot demonstration project for the use of Road Safety Audits. 

Other companies like Japan Corn Starch and Nihon Shokuhin Kako are involved in R D as well as pilot demonstration projects. Their production capacity is unknown and there is no information on how their materials differ from the other starch-based products offered in the market. The trademarks of their materials are Cornpole and Placorn, respectively. 

Coal is expected to be the best domestic feedstock alternative to natural gas. Although coal-based ammonia plants have been built elsewhere, there is no such plant in the United States. Pilot-scale projects have demonstrated effective ammonia-from-coal technology (102). The cost of ammonia production can be anticipated to increase, lea ding to increases in the cost of producing nitrogen fertilizers. 

Laboratory and pilot plant projects have demonstrated the feasibility of producing high-calorie gas from coal. 

There are several initiatives for the development and demonstration of CCS worldwide. For instance, the European Union has an ambition to deploy 10-12 full-scale CCS demonstration projects within Europe by 2015, testing various ways of integrating CCS in coal and gas-fired power generation it also aims for CCS to be commercially viable for all new fossil fuel power plants by 2020, with existing plants progressively retrofitted (EC, 2007). Other pilot and demonstration plants are planned in the United States, Australia and China.5... 

FlyPOCEN will explore the limits of using hydrogen as a means of de-carbonising fossil fuels and therefore its potential to bridge to a future hydrogen economy. The aim of the project will be to develop and operate a pilot demonstration plant and prove the feasibility, safety and economics, of carbon capture and sequestration. 

Based on data from the Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) program demonstration, total demonstration project costs were calculated to be 813,505 (1992 dollars). The vendor calculated costs to prepare for and execute the treatability study at their pilot-scale... 

Currently, a small pilot-scale study is under way, and a 2-ton (1.8-metric ton) per hour commercial demonstration is under design for treating soils contaminated with hydrocarbons or hazardous organic residues. This technology is not yet commercially available, and Recol Engineering, Ltd., is interested in pursuing joint ventures or demonstration projects. 

In the fall of 1999, a pilot zeolite barrier was installed at the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) in Western New York. The WVDP is an environmental management project being conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with the cooperation of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. Details of the installation are reported by Moore et al. (2000). The clinoptilolite material used in the barrier had previously been studied by Cantrell (1996) for a proposed installation at the DOE Hanford Facility, by Fuhrmann et al. (1995) for use at the WVDP, and by Lee et al. (1998) for the 1998 installation at Chalk River, Ontario. The range of previously estimated distribution coefficients (Kd) was from 650 mL/g (Fuhrmann et al.) to 2600 mL/g (Cantrell). The variation across these studies is most likely attributable to differences in the source water and experimental conditions, although the data interpretation...

This technology has been demonstrated at pilot scale by both organisations, however, it still has to be operated in demonstration scale applications to prove its reliability and economics, BTG will use the technology in a demonstration project (39), which is schedule to start operation by 2002. 

Develop pilot-scale hydrogen production demonstration project using real wastes. 

The Duluth demonstration project described in this section targeted PAHs. The demonstration began in 2002-2003 as a simulated in situ sediment treatment pilot project. After 2003, it continued as a project to test ECGO under modified field operating conditions and concluded in 2007 as an ex situ (heaped) treatment test. 

Already there are a few examples of large-scale reactions under such conditions (Table 6.6). Although it is likely that some are demonstration projects at a pilot scale, the transesterification of fats (see Scheme 6.29) is now a commercial reality in the manufacture of cocoa butter substitutes (50) and of methylethyltetradecanoate (isopropylmyristate) (51). The former is a valuable food ingredient, while the latter is used as a bulking agent in the formulation of cosmetics. 

To evaluate the sustainability concerning economic, environmental, and social aspects the Department of Energy (DOE) is funding integrated biorefinery projects in pilot, demonstration, and commercial scale. The importance of biochemical conversion is underlined by the fact that four out of five commercial scale plants funded by the DOE are based on biochemical conversion (Department of Energy, 2012).
