Figure 4. Effluent breakthrough curves for clinoptilolite laboratory columns (Table 4). The nonradioactive source groundwater was obtained from the West Valley Demonstration Project site and adjusted by increasing the Sr concentration from approximately 200 pg/L to 1 mg/L (for clarity, Sr units are pg/L, others are mg/L). In the fall of 1999, a pilot zeolite barrier was installed at the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) in Western New York. The WVDP is an environmental management project being conducted by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with the cooperation of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority. Details of the installation are reported by Moore et al. (2000). The clinoptilolite material used in the barrier had previously been studied by Cantrell (1996) for a proposed installation at the DOE Hanford Facility, by Fuhrmann et al. (1995) for use at the WVDP, and by Lee et al. (1998) for the 1998 installation at Chalk River, Ontario. The range of previously estimated distribution coefficients (Kd) was from 650 mL/g (Fuhrmann et al.) to 2600 mL/g (Cantrell). The variation across these studies is most likely attributable to differences in the source water and experimental conditions, although the data interpretation... [Pg.132]

Early statutory definitions of high-level waste are contained in the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act of 1972 (MPRSA, 1972) and the West Valley Demonstration Project Act of 1980 (WVDPA, 1980). These definitions are consistent with the definition developed by AEC. [Pg.177]

The usefulness of the analytical method for the identification of dyes in old textile materials is demonstrated in the following. Figure 6 illustrates a fragment of a woven fabric from the south coast of Peru, probably from the valley of the Rio Nazca. This object is dated A.D. 100-200. We have investigated this sample for the Museum fur Volkerkunde in Hamburg, West Germany. [Pg.164]

In another approach to serving industry through technology transfer, the FLC s Far West Region has begun a demonstration project to establish an active brokerage service within the industrial community. The city of Santa Clara, California (in the heart of "silicon valley") was selected as the first trial and demonstration site. A Task Force composed of representatives of the Santa Clara Chamber of Commerce, the local business community, the FLC, the Southwest Innovation Group and the City of Santa Clara was formed to develop a plan of action and to develop an operational structure. [Pg.91]
