Painting adhesive PVAC

Vinyl acetate is polymerized to poly(vinyl acetate), (PVAc), which finds use in adhesives and water-based paints. Some PVAc is hydrolyzed (reacted with water) to poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for textile sizing, adhesives, and paper coatings. A substantial amount of U.S.-produced vinyl acetate is exported. Prior to 1970, almost all vinyl acetate was made from acetylene. Now none of it is. [Pg.121]

Poly(vinyl acetate) latex is used in the production of water-based emulsion paints, adhesives, and textile and paper treatments. Emulsion paints are stable, dry quickly, and are relatively low cost. PVAC emulsion adhesives are used in labeling and packaging, and as the popular consumer white glue. Copolymers with dibutyl fumarate, vinyl stearate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, or ethyl acrylate are used to obtain compositions that are softer for emulsion use. As indicated above, a major use of poly(vinyl acetate) is in the production of poly(vinyl alcohol), which is itself the starting material for poly(viityl butyral) and poly(vinyl formal). [Pg.433]

Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) is the largest volume polymer produced from a vinyl ester (1). In 1990, over 2.5 billion pounds of vinyl acetate monomer were produced in the United States alone (2). The bulk of this monomer was used for making PVAc and PVAc copolymers, which are widely used in water-based paints, adhesives, coatings, and binders for nonwoven paper products. PVAc is also the precursor to polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyvinyl butyral, which cannot be made by direct polymerization. Methods of PVAc polymerization vary depending on the end use. Solution polymerizations of vinyl acetate in methanol are generally employed in processes in which PVAc is used as an intermediate in the production of PVA. PVAc latexes are generally made by emulsion polymerization, and PVAc in bead form is often synthesized by suspension polymerization (3,4). [Pg.303]

Polyvinyl Acetate n A colorless, odorless, nontoxic, transparent, thermoplastic, water-insoluble, resinous high polymer derived from the polymerization of vinyl acetate with a catalyst used as a latex binder in certain paints and as an intermediate in the synthesis of polyvinyl acetal and polyvinyl alcohol. The major use is in water-based latex paints, adhesives, fabric finishes, and lacquers. In the plastics industry, the copolymers of vinyl acetate, particularly with vinyl chloride, are of most interest. Abbreviation for PVA and PVAc. [Pg.575]

Vinyl acetate [108-05-4] (VAc), CH2=CHOOCCH2, the ethenyl ester of acetic acid, is primarily use for the manufacture of poly(vinyl acetate) [9003-20-7] (PVAc) and vinyl acetate copolymers. Poly(vinyl acetate) homo- and copolymers are found as components in coatings, paints and sealants, binders (adhesives, nonwovens, constmction products, and carpet-backing), and miscellaneous uses such as chewing gum and tablet coatings. AppHcations have grown over the years in a number of areas (1 4). [Pg.458]

Growth in PVAc consumption is illustrated in Eigure 3. The emulsions continue to dominate the adhesives and paint markets. It also shows the distribution of PVAc and copolymer usage by market. The companies Hsted in Table 10 are among the principal suppHers of poly(vinyl acetate)s and vinyl acetate copolymers, but there are numerous other suppHers. Many other companies produce these polymers and consume them internally in the formulation of products. [Pg.467]

The first synthetic polymers to be used as paint varnishes were acrylic and vinylic resins. Poly(vinyl acetate) (PVAc), commercialized under the name Mowilith by Hoechst and Vinylite by Union Carbide, has been used in conservation as an adhesive since 1932 and in 1937 it was proposed as a picture varnish by Stout and Cross [63]. PVAc was soon rejected as a varnish because, despite its light stability and good solubility in organic solvents, it demonstrated poor optical properties in terms of colour saturation and the tendency to pick up dirt due to its low glass transition temperature. [Pg.343]
