Glycerol is used in nearly every industry. The largest single use is in dmgs and oral care products including toothpaste, mouthwash, and oral rinses (Table 3). Its use in tobacco processing and urethane foams remains at a fairly even consumption level. Use in foods and cosmetics is growing.

Over the years, DAP has proven itself with numerous innovations such as the Quadra Action and the Cool Skin in Shaving Grooming and the Cellesse and the Satin-Ice in Body Beauty. Philips DAP has also forged a few strategic marketing alliances, for example with Beiersdorf for the development and production of the additive for the Cool Skin shaver. Last year Philips DAP acquired the Optiva Corporation, a major US producer of electric toothbmshes, and became market leader in oral care products in North America. 

Thymol is used as a dry top note in lavender compositions, in men s fragrances, and as a disinfectant in oral care products. It is also important as a starting material for the production of racemic menthol. 

Eucalyptus oils with a high cineole content are used for cineole production. The oils and cineole itself are used primarily in pharmaceutical preparations. Fairly large quantities are also used in perfumery, e.g., to imitate the odor of cineole-containing essential oils and flavoring of food (sweets) and oral care products. Fennel oil is mainly used in flavoring oral care products and in pharmaceutical preparations. A reasonably quantity of fennel oil is used for the production of pure anethole for flavouring alcoholic beverages (anise liqueurs) [513dj. FCT 1976 (17) p.529 [8006-84-6], [84625-39-8]. 

By far the most spearmint oil is used for flavoring toothpaste and chewing gum. Smaller quantities are used in other oral care products and in pharmaceutical preparations. FCT 1976 (16) p.871 [8008-79-5], [84696-51-5]. 

Star anise oil and its product, anethole, are used primarily in the alcoholic beverage industry (anise liquors), but also for flavoring food and oral care products. FCT 1975 (13) p.715 [68952-43-2], [84650-59-9]. 

Tingling compounds are mostly used in oral-care products and chewing gums. In low amounts, they can be used for spicy formulations. Most of the tingling compounds can trigger salivation to a certain extent [54]. 

Commercial applications. Over the last decade, bovine LF has been commercialised in various applications, e.g., in milk-based infant formulas, health supplements, functional foods and drinks, cosmetics, oral care products, chewing gums and feed supplements (Steijns, 2001). Such products are targeted at optimal iron delivery, mimicking human breast milk or boosting natural defense systems against infections. Also, LF could be exploited as a natural antioxidant due to its strong ability to bind iron, which is an important catalyst for free radical formation inside the cells. 

Cosmetic applications require specific effect pigments that are approved for use according to cosmetic regulations. The applications of these pigments include color cosmetics (lipsticks, eyeshadows, blushers, eye pencils, make-up, mascaras, nail lacquers), personal care products (shampoos, body washes, lotions, creams, oral care products, hair gels), and special effect items (theatrical and costume make-up, temporary hair color sprays) [5.164].

Anise oil is used for flavoring foods, beverages, and oral care products.

All eight isomers possess characteristic minty odours. The reason for the importance of /-menthol is its ability to interact, not only with odour receptors, but also with the receptors which sense cold. The presence of menthol will induce cold receptors to respond as if they had sensed a drop in temperature. This physiologically induced sensation of cold is used in many products from foodstuffs, such as confectionery, chewing gum, through oral care products such as toothpaste to cosmetic preparations such as shaving products. There is therefore a large market for menthol and, since not all of it can be met from natural mint oils, a demand for synthetic material. Consequently, there has been a lot of work on the synthesis of menthol and all of the synthetic routes considered must take stereochemistry into account as /-menthol is always the preferred target. 

A review of human studies on oral care products that contain bloodroot extracts indicates that multiple 14-day, 28-day, 90-day, and 6-month studies on these products have been completed and that the products were generally well tolerated, with cases of soft tissue irritation being reported in a small number of trial participants (Munro et al. 1999). 

Typical applications of these cool substances include their use as coolants in medicinal preparations, shower gels, oral care products and confectionery products. Surprisingly, in 2004 Markus Gautschi and Philippe Blondeau at Givaudan discovered that cool substances such as WS-3 also have a repellant effect on cockroaches. [121]... 

Herlofson and Barkpoll, in an experimental toothpaste study involving twenty eight subjects, determined that sodium lauryl sulfate significantly increased the incidence of desquamation of oral mucosa when compared with cocamidopropyl betaine. Less toxic detergents, such as cocamidopropyl betaine, were therefore found to be desirable in oral care products (113). 

Different analytes are determined by using electrochemical techniques such as differential pulse voltammetry (e.g., metal ions and chlorhexidine in oral care products, glycolic acid in creams, dyes in lipsticks) or potentiometry (e.g., inorganic compounds and anionic and cationic surfactants in personal care products). Modified carbon electrodes and biosensors have been developed to determine some cosmetic ingredients by techniques such as voltammetry or potentiometry. 

Pullulan is a polysaccharide obtained from the fermentation of starch by the yeast Aurobasidiutn pullulans. It is edible and tasteless. It is used as edible films for food packaging with high oxygen permeability, oral care products, adhesives, thickeners, stabilizers, etc..
