Micro availability

Two simple methods for the semi-micro estimation of halogens are available, (a) the Carius method, and (b) the Parr bomb method. It should be emphasised that there are other methods available for these estimations on the true micro scale, but they do not lend themselves, by virtue of the balances, apparatus and manipulation required, to semi-micro work, or to the intermittent usage which class-work necessarily entails. [Pg.502]

When only minute quantities of liquid are available, either of two micro methods for the determination of the boiling point may be used. [Pg.85]

Scale of Operation The scale of operation for precipitation gravimetry is governed by the sensitivity of the balance and the availability of sample. To achieve an accuracy of 0.1% using an analytical balance with a sensitivity of 0.1 mg, the precipitate must weigh at least 100 mg. As a consequence, precipitation gravimetry is usually limited to major or minor analytes, and macro or meso samples (see Figure 3.6 in Chapter 3). The analysis of trace level analytes or micro samples usually requires a microanalytical balance. [Pg.254]

In field testing, there are many commercial products and instmments available that ate helphil in rapidly detecting, identifying, and quantifying micro organisms. [Pg.140]

The use of impedance electrochemical techniques to study corrosion mechanisms and to determine corrosion rates is an emerging technology. Elec trode impedance measurements have not been widely used, largely because of the sophisticated electrical equipment required to make these measurements. Recent advantages in micro-elec tronics and computers has moved this technique almost overnight from being an academic experimental investigation of the concept itself to one of shelf-item commercial hardware and computer software, available to industrial corrosion laboratories. [Pg.2437]

Because C-curves are determined by quench-hold-quench sequences they can, strictly speaking, only be used to predict the micro structures that would be produced in a steel subjected to a quench-hold-quench heat treatment. But the curves do give a pretty good indication of the structures to expect in a steel that has been cooled eontinuously. For really accurate predictions, however, eontinuous eooling diagrams are available (see the literature of the major steel manufacturers). [Pg.123]

Micro-scaling or bottom up approach to quality costs, where it is possible to calculate the cost of losses involved in manufacture and due to returns and/or claims. This method requires a great deal of experience and relies on the availability of detailed cost data throughout a product s life-cycle. While this is a crucial activity for a business, it is also not a practical approach for estimating the quality cost for product in the early stages of product development. [Pg.14]

The mode of action of plasticizers can be explained using the Gel theory [35 ]. According to this theory, the deformation resistance of amorphous polymers can be ascribed to the cross-links between active centres which are continuously formed and destroyed. The cross-links are constituted by micro-aggregates or crystallites of small size. When a plasticizer is added, its molecules also participate in the breaking down and re-forming of these cross-links. As a consequence, a proportion of the active centres of the polymer are solvated and do not become available for polymer-to-polymer links, the polymer structure being correspondingly loosened. [Pg.627]

Different approaches utilizing multidimensional EC or SEC systems have been reported for the analysis of middle distillates in diesel fuel. A method, based on the EC separation of paraffins and naphthenes by means of a micro-particulate, organic gel column has been described (23, 24). The complete system contained up to four different EC columns, a number of column-switching valves and a dielectric constant detector. However, the EC column for the separation of paraffins and naphthenes, which is an essential part of the system, is no longer commercially available. [Pg.394]

Carbohydrates are relatively cheap, available in large quantities and are readily utilisable source of carbon and energy for most micro-organisms. These considerations are particularly important for those exopolysaccharides produced on a large (bulk chemical) scale. [Pg.202]

Electric road vehicles have been reduced to insignificance, as mentioned already by, vehicles with combustion engines. Another electric vehicle — the electrically driven submarine — presented a continuous challenge to lead-acid battery separator development since the 1930s and 1940s. The wood veneers originally used in electric vehicles proved too difficult to handle, especially if tall cells had to be manufactured. Therefore much intense effort took place to develop the first plastic separators. In this respect the microporous hard rubber separator, still available today in a more advanced version, and a micro-porous PVC separator (Porvic I) merit special mention 28]. For the latter a molten blend of PVC, plasticizer and starch was rolled into a flat product. In a lengthy pro-... [Pg.256]

The quality and quantity of sites which are capable of reversible lithium accommodation depend in a complex manner on the crystallinity, the texture, the (mi-cro)structure, and the (micro)morphology of the carbonaceous host material [7, 19, 22, 40-57]. The type of carbon determines the current/potential characteristics of the electrochemical intercalation reaction and also potential side-reactions. Carbonaceous materials suitable for lithium intercalation are commercially available in many types and qualities [19, 43, 58-61], Many exotic carbons have been specially synthesized on a laboratory scale by pyrolysis of various precursors, e.g., carbons with a remarkably high lithium storage capacity (see Secs. [Pg.386]

There several DO probes available. Some well-known branded fermenters, like New Brunswick, Bioflo series and the B. Braun Biotstat B fermenters are equipped with a DO meter. This unit has a 2 litre fermentation vessel equipped with DO meter and pH probe, antifoam sensor and level controllers for harvesting culture. The concentration of DO in the media is a function of temperature. The higher operating temperature would decrease the level of DO. A micro-sparger is used to provide sufficient small air bubbles. The air bubbles are stabilized in the media and the liquid phase is saturated with air. The availability of oxygen is major parameter to be considered in effective microbial cell growth rate. [Pg.15]

Normal laboratory glassware must first be washed and cleaned. It has to be rinsed with deionised water. The clean glassware is sterilised in an oven set at 200 °C for 1 1 hours. It is suitable to cover glassware with aluminum foil to maintain aseptic conditions after removing the glassware from the oven. If aluminum foil is not available, special heat-resistant wrap paper can be used. The sterile glassware must be protected from the air, which has micro-flora, or any contaminants. Avoid the use of any plastic caps and papers. Detach any labelling tape or other flammable materials, as they are fire hazards. [Pg.348]

All discussions of transport processes currently available in the literature are based on perturbation theory methods applied to kinetic pictures of micro-scattering processes within the macrosystem of interest. These methods do involve time-dependent hamiltonians in the sense that the interaction operates only during collisions, while the wave functions are known only before and after the collision. However these interactions are purely internal, and their time-dependence is essentially implicit the over-all hamiltonian of the entire system, such as the interaction term in Eq. (8-159) is not time-dependent, and such micro-scattering processes cannot lead to irreversible changes of thermodynamic (ensemble average) properties. [Pg.483]

For more precise work, micro hot stage methods under a microscope are used. For all compds, except those which are isotropic or become so on heating, the mp can best be observed by means of a polarizing microscope, since the temp at which color disappears arid the space lattice is ruptured is the true mp. Among numerous models of micro-hot stages, the Kofler micro-hot stage has attained widespread use and is commercially available (Refs 3 4)... [Pg.76]

For flow at a given rate, the only way to significantly increase the heat transfer coefficient is to reduce the channel size, whose optimum can be calculated assuming a practical limit on the available pressure. Recourse to multiple channels, instead of continuous coolant flow over the entire back substrate surface, enables one to multiply the substrate area by a factor (jp, representing the total surface area of the channel walls which are in contact with fluid. Single-row micro-channels etched dir-... [Pg.18]

Reliable micro-scale measurement and control of the temperature are required in developing thermal micro-devices. Available measurement techniques can be largely classified into contact and non-contact groups. While the resistance thermometer, thermocouples, thermodiodes, and thermotransistors measure temperature at specific points in contact with them, infrared thermography, thermochromic liquid crystals (TLC), and temperature-sensitive fluorescent dyes cover the whole temperature field (Yoo 2006). [Pg.27]
