Medical examination

Most of the forensic science or crime laboratories located in North America are associated with law enforcement agencies, medical examiner—coroner departments, or prosecutors offices. There are a large number of independent consultants, also. Laboratories exist at the municipal, county, state, and federal levels of government. There are approximately 300 government-operated forensic science laboratories in the United States. 

The Eederal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act set standards for mine ventilation, roof support, coal dust concentrations levels, mine inspections, and equipment. As a part of this comprehensive act, miners must receive medical examinations at employer expense, and payments are made from the U.S. government to miners who caimot work because of black lung disease.

Different values are found in literature. Depending on the degree of exposure, periodic medical examination is suggested. The symptoms of poisoning do not become manifest until days.

DAWN is a morbidity and mortality information system, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in which data are collected from a sample of more than 800 hospitals located in 27 major metropolitan areas in the continental United States, from a National panel of hospitals outside of these areas, and from medical examiners/coroners located in 26 major metropolitan areas.

The medical examiner for the City and County of Honolulu ruled that the cause of Burns s death was asphyxiation. Laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of PCP in his body. However, it was the medical examiner s opinion that PCP did not play a role in the death. It was later learned that the medical examiner s knowledge of PCP was limited to articles he had read that were written by experts subsequently retained by the City and County of Honolulu.

The determination of quantity in complex mixtures is also vital in health care and medicine. We are all familiar with the medical examinations in which a sample of blood or urine is sent to a laboratory for analysis. The procedures used have been developed by chemists, and are performed by trained chemical technicians. The high level of automation achieved by the chemists who designed these analytical procedures has greatly reduced the costs of such analyses.
