Fig. 3. (a) General locations of hydrothemial power plants in the continental United States (6). Power is produced directiy from hydrothermal steam indicated by the steam plume at The Geysers in northern California. At all other locations, hot water resources are utilized for power production. In 1993, a hydrothermal power plant also came on line on the island of Hawaii, (b) Location of The Geysers steam-dominated hydrothermal field (D) in Lake and Sonoma counties, within the boundaries of the Cleadake—Geysers thermal anomaly (B). [Pg.264]

Shipping. Distribution of anhydrous ammonia ia the United States is fackitated by pipeline, where three companies serve 11 states having lines almost 4800 km ia total length, by water, where over 4800 km of river barge transport capabkity exists, by rak, where an extensive network ia the continental United States has tie-ias to Canada and Mexico, and by tmck, used mainly for iaterstate or local dehvery. [Pg.354]

General price information for 1996 on commercially available xanthates from a Canadian company is given ia Table 5. Prices are approximate based oa tmckload shipments within the continental United States (excluding Alaska). [Pg.366]

DAWN is a morbidity and mortality information system, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, in which data are collected from a sample of more than 800 hospitals located in 27 major metropolitan areas in the continental United States, from a National panel of hospitals outside of these areas, and from medical examiners/coroners located in 26 major metropolitan areas. [Pg.184]

Regional climate should be the first consideration when evaluating the suitability of an alternative landfill cover for a site. If the regional climate appears to be compatible with the requirements of the alternative cover, then site characteristics should be examined to determine whether the site climate is also suitable. Site and regional climate may differ substantially for sites near mountains, in valleys, in the rain shadow of coastal mountains, or near the coast. The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence commissioned a generic assessment of the suitability of the ET landfill cover based on regional climate for the continental United States.4... [Pg.1066]

Hauser and Gimon4 estimated the ratio of PET to precipitation for the continental United States the results are summarized in Figure 25.5. They arbitrarily used a PET ratio of 1.2 or greater to indicate likely success for the ET cover because AET is likely to be less than PET. The ratio of PET to precipitation is >1 for almost all of the continental United States. The ET cover is likely to be appropriate for sites where the ratio is >1.2 but it may also be appropriate and should be evaluated for all sites where the ratio is >1.14... [Pg.1067]

Collector (collects samples of the suspect aerosol for analysis by the JBPDS, and for confirmatory analysis by supporting laboratories in the Communications Zone and the continental United States). [Pg.318]

The U.S. Army is in the process of destroying the country s stockpile of aging chemical weapons, stored at eight locations in the continental United States and on Johnston Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. The deadline for completing the destruction of these weapons, as specified by the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) international treaty, is April 29, 2007. Originally, the Army selected incineration as the preferred baseline destruction technology, and it currently operates two incineration facilities—one on Johnston Atoll and one at the Deseret Chemical Depot near Tooele, Utah. The Johnston Atoll Chemical Agent Disposal System (JACADS) completed destruction of the stockpile on Johnston Island in late 2000, and closure of the... [Pg.22]

Chloroform has been identified in at least 717 of 1,428 current or past EPA National Priorities List (NPL) sites (HazDat 1996). However, the number of sites evaluated for chloroform is not known. Figure 5-1 shows the distribution of sites in the continental United States there are 710 such sites. In addition, there are 6 sites in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico and one site in the Virgin Islands (not shown in Figure 5-1). [Pg.198]

Given this complex maze of Information needs, the EPA is expected to provide guidance on disposal of pesticide wastes In all parts of the continental United States as well as In other parts of the world. This has created a serious challenge. [Pg.10]

The successful closure of JACADS will be a major accomplishment for the CSDP and will provide guidance for the closure of other chemical agent disposal facilities in the continental United States. This chapter examines a number of the technical considerations involved in planning for the closure. Issues related to the execution of a closure plan and postclosure activities are covered in Chapters 4 and 5. [Pg.34]
