Measurements of Coated Surface

A high bacteria level of coating color chemicals may influence the machine runn-ability. Furthermore, for coated paper that comes into contact with food the bacteria level has to be low. The bacteria level of a material can be counted by the so-called Easicult Combi test. This method of control is easier than doing a plate cultivation (see also section 3.7.4). [Pg.369]

FTIR has been used extensively for identification of coatings. Important methods for the study of paint material are KBr pellets prepared from scratched off paint material, ATR measurement of coated surfaces and measurements on cross sections of a coating with FTIR microspectroscopy. FTIR is an excellent way of obtaining information quickly about the basic chemical class of a binding material. Samples are placed in a diamond anvil cell and compressed to a thin film a beam condenser focuses the IR beam to an area of 1.0 mm [99]. Qther methods for determining the binder structure of cross-linked systems comprise PyGC. [Pg.19]

The STM uses this eflFect to obtain a measurement of the surface by raster scanning over the sample in a manner similar to AFM while measuring the tunneling current. The probe tip is typically a few tenths of a nanometer from the sample. Individual atoms and atomic-scale surface structure can be measured in a field size that is usually less than 1 pm x 1 pm, but field sizes of 10 pm x 10 pm can also be imaged. STM can provide better resolution than AFM. Conductive samples are required, but insulators can be analyzed if coated with a conductive layer. No other sample preparation is required. [Pg.704]

Figure 16 shows the experimental arrangement for the measurement of the surface pressure. The trough (200 mm long, 50 mm wide and 10 mm deep) was coated with Teflon. The subphase temperature was controlled within 0.1 C by means of a jacket connected to a thermostated water circulator, and the environmental air temperature was kept at 18 °C. The surface tension was measured with a Wilhelmy plate of platinum(24.5 x 10.0 x 0.15 mm). The surface pressure monitored by an electronic balance was successively stored in a micro- computer, and then Fourier transformed to a frequency domain. The surface area was changed successively in a sinusoidal manner, between 37.5 A2/molecule and 62.5 A2/molecule. We have chosen an unsaturated phospholipid(l,2-dioleoyl-3-sn-phosphatidyI-choline DOPC) as a curious sample to measure the dynamic surface tension with this novel instrument, as the unsaturated lipids play an important role in biomembranes and, moreover, such a "fluid" lipid was expected to exhibit marked dynamic, nonlinear characteristics. The spreading solution was 0.133 mM chloroform solution of DOPC. The chloroform was purified with three consecutive distillations. [Pg.243]

The LB film depositions were performed using a Joyce-Loebl Langmuir Trough IV equipped with a microbalance for measurement of the surface pressure by the Wilhelmy plate method. Filtered deionized water with a pH of 7 was used for the subphase. For the electron beam lithography study, PMMA was spread on the water surface from a dilute benzene solution ( 10 mg PMMA in 20 ml benzene). The novolac/PAC mixtures were spread from solutions ( 20 mg solids in 10 ml solvent) of isopropyl acetate. For the fluorescence studies, the PMMA/PDA mixture was spread on fee water surface from a dilute benzene solution (1.75 mg PDA and 8.33 mg PMMA in 20 ml benzene). Prior to compression, a 20 min interval was allowed for solvent evaporation. The Langmuir film was compressed to the desired transfer pressure at a rate of 50 cm2/min, followed by a 20 minute equilibration period. The Cr-coated silicon wafers and quartz wafers were immersed into fee subphase before... [Pg.351]

A second important measure of coating chemistry is the contact angle. Contact angle measures the relative hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of a surface and is measured with a simple apparatus known as a goniometer. A simple schematic is shown in Figure 52.10 to provide an idea of how the measurement is achieved and what it means. The contact angle is always measured at the point where all three phases (liquid droplet, solid surface, gas) meet. The lower the contact angle, the more hydrophilic is... [Pg.1454]

Chemokine receptor expression on the VP can be determined by Western blot using specific antibodies, by ELISA on VP-coated plates, or by flow cytometry. In this last case, small particle size limits measurement of the surface proteins by conventional techniques, and particles are coupled to latex beads to allow detection. [Pg.12]

A major advance in force measurement was the development by Tabor, Win-terton and Israelachvili of a surface force apparatus (SFA) involving crossed cylinders coated with molecularly smooth cleaved mica sheets [11, 28]. A current version of an apparatus is shown in Fig. VI-4 from Ref. 29. The separation between surfaces is measured interferometrically to a precision of 0.1 nm the surfaces are driven together with piezoelectric transducers. The combination of a stiff double-cantilever spring with one of a number of measuring leaf springs provides force resolution down to 10 dyn (10 N). Since its development, several groups have used the SFA to measure the retarded and unretarded dispersion forces, electrostatic repulsions in a variety of electrolytes, structural and solvation forces (see below), and numerous studies of polymeric and biological systems. [Pg.236]

Rutherford backscattering spectrometry is the measurement of the energies of ions scattered back from the surface and the outer microns (1 micron = 1 pm) of a sample. Typically, helium ions with energies around 2 MeV are used and the sample is a metal coated silicon wafer that has been ion implanted with about a... [Pg.1827]

Examination of oven-aged samples has demonstrated that substantial degradation is limited to the outer surface (34), ie, the oxidation process is diffusion limited. Consistent with this conclusion is the observation that oxidation rates are dependent on sample thickness (32). Impact property measurements by high speed puncture tests have shown that the critical thickness of the degraded layer at which surface fracture changes from ductile to brittle is about 0.2 mm. Removal of the degraded layer restores ductiHty (34). Effects of embrittled surface thickness on impact have been studied using ABS coated with styrene—acrylonitrile copolymer (35). [Pg.203]

Enclosed agitated filters are useful when volatile solvents are in use or when the solvent gives off toxic vapor or fume. Another significant advantage is that their operation does not require any manual labor. Control can be manual or automatic, usually by timers or by specific measurements of the product. Most filters are made of mild steel, with the exposed surfaces protected by lead, tile, mbber lining, or by coating or spraying with other substances as necessary. Filtration areas up to 10 m are available and the maximum cake thickness is 1 m. Apphcations are mainly in the chemical industry for the recovery of solvents. [Pg.394]
