Figure 16 shows the experimental arrangement for the measurement of the surface pressure. The trough (200 mm long, 50 mm wide and 10 mm deep) was coated with Teflon. Unlike ductile metals, composite laminates containing fiber-reinforced thermosetting polymers do not exhibit gross ductile yielding. However, they do not behave as classic brittle materials, either. Under a static tensile load, many of these laminates show nonlinear characteristics attributed to sequential ply failures. One common nonlinear characteristic of control valves is hysteresis, which results in two possible flows at a given valve position, depending on whether the valve is opening or closing.
