Oven-ageing

Ageing ovens are similar in nature to post-cure ovens requiring very accurate temperature control systems and monitoring for volume throughput of circulating air to ensure compliance with the requirements of specification testing.

A. Linear rates of change must be obtained at all temperatures used in the study by a consistent mathematical treatment of the data. This can be verified by measurements at multiple withdrawal times from accelerated-aging ovens. 

The oxidative binder samples of Estane/NP were placed in glass ampoules and flame sealed under argon. Tensile specimens were placed in metal aging chambers, evacuated and back filled with argon to provide a dry oxygen free environment. The samples were placed in aging ovens at 55, 65 and 75°C and removed periodically for analysis.

Hot air ovens are the most important tool for testing the thermal oxidative resistance of plastics. Several commercial weatherometers provide similar temperatures and provided the UV shorter wavelength cut-off is not less than that experienced in sunshine ( 290 nm) [62], these are realistic practical conditions for plastics that end up on the soil particularly in the sunbelt countries, where they are wisely used. International standards describe the use of typical commercial laboratory techniques. Since ageing and weathering procedures have been standardised for the benefit of manufacturers and users of plastics, it is not considered that the details of the weathering procedure should be part of the standard itself, provided that full reference is made to the standard method chosen. ASTM D 5510-94 [60] describes a convenient heat-ageing oven for degradable plastics.
