Paint raw materials

A commercial instrument by the Swiss company CSEM (now CSM) was tested in the course of a project at the Research Institute for Pigments and Paints (Forschungs-institut fur Pigmente und Lacke e.V. (FPL)). This instrument is based on the method developed at the DuPont Marshall Lab. Objective of the project - where manufacturers of paints, raw materials and automobiles worked together - was the evaluation of the CSEM nano-scratch-tester regarding reproducibility, accuracy and applicability under the aspect of a realistic determination of scratch resistance.

The binders used in the production of alkyd paints, namely alkyd resins, are oil-modified or fatty-acid-modified condensation polymers of polybasic acids and polyhydric alcohols. Alkyd resins account for ca. 45 % of the total world production of paint raw materials, excluding plastics latexes and polyvinyl dispersions. 

Combination of Alkyd Resins with Other Binders. Alkyd resins can be combined in many different ways with other paint raw materials. In one method alkyd resins are mixed with preformulated products this is normally carried out in the paint factory. Alternatively, the reactivity of the initial products can be employed to modify the alkyd resin during production. 

Resols suitable for use in paints generally cannot be used as the sole binder because they produce very hard, brittle paint films after stoving. They must therefore be combined with other paint raw materials [e.g., epoxy resins, poly(vinyl butyrals and polyester resins)].
