The fifth component is the stmcture, a material selected for weak absorption for neutrons, and having adequate strength and resistance to corrosion. In thermal reactors, uranium oxide pellets are held and supported by metal tubes, called the cladding. The cladding is composed of zirconium, in the form of an alloy called Zircaloy. Some early reactors used aluminum fast reactors use stainless steel. Additional hardware is required to hold the bundles of fuel rods within a fuel assembly and to support the assembhes that are inserted and removed from the reactor core. Stainless steel is commonly used for such hardware. If the reactor is operated at high temperature and pressure, a thick-walled steel reactor vessel is needed. [Pg.210]

Materials selection for low-temperature service is a specialized area. In general, it is necessaiy to select materials and fabrication methods which will provide adequate toughness at all operating conditions. It is frequently necessaiy to specify Charpy V-notch (or other appropriate) qu fication tests to demonstrate adequate toughness of carbon and low-aUoy steels at minimum operating temperatures. [Pg.2464]

We shall now examine material selection for a pressure vessel able to contain a gas at pressure p, first minimising the weight, and then the cost. We shall seek a design that will not fail by plastic collapse (i.e. general yield). But we must be cautious structures can also fail by fast fracture, by fatigue, and by corrosion superimposed on these other modes of failure. We shall discuss these in Chapters 13, 15 and 23. Here we shall assume that plastic collapse is our only problem. [Pg.124]

The material selected for the pin was 070M20 normalized mild steel. The pin was to be manufactured by machining from bar and was assumed to have non-critical dimensional variation in terms of the stress distribution, and therefore the overload stress could be represented by a unique value. The pin size would be determined based on the —3 standard deviation limit of the material s endurance strength in shear. This infers that the probability of failure of the con-rod system due to fatigue would be very low, around 1350 ppm assuming a Normal distribution for the endurance strength in shear. This relates to a reliability R a 0.999 which is adequate for the... [Pg.245]

Proper material selection for chemical and process equipment is one of the first important problems encountered by the designer. Among the many parameters that must be considered are structural strength specifications, heat resistance, corrosion resistance, physical properties, fabrication characteristics, composition and structure of material and cost. [Pg.51]

Material selection for the enclosure shell should consider the corrosiveness of the environment. Aluminized sheeting is preferred over zinc-coated material in a steel-production environment. [Pg.903]

The continuous development of new materials has resulted in changing attitudes towards materials selection for corrosion control, and the range of materials now available can be gauged from the Materials Selector Review", which becomes considerably thicker each time it is updated. Plastics are replacing metals for a variety of applications and a recent application is the use of g.r.p. in place of metals for the construction of hulls of hovercrafts the corrosive action of the high velocity spray of sea-water is such that very few metals are capable of withstanding it and the use of g.r.p. represents the... [Pg.1456]

Design involves establishing the configuration of the products that will form the basis on which suitable material selected for anticipated requirements and processes can be applied. During the drawing of shapes and cross sections, there are certain design features with plastic materials that have to be kept in order to avoid failure or degrada-... [Pg.158]

The functions and property characteristics of a product will be largely determined by the performance requirements and material selected for fabrication. The basic requirement of the process is its capability of handling a suitable material. For example, if a major function requirement is for resistance to creep under high loads, it is probable that a long-fiber RP will be necessary. Thus it would immediately eliminate such processes as blow molding and conventional injection molding. [Pg.555]

A striking illustration of the effect of chemical structure on insecticidal properties is provided by the data given in this paper on compounds related to piperonyl butoxide. According to the above theory, the methylenedioxyphenyl nucleus present in this substance is the toxophore. The materials selected for comparison show the reduction in toxicity produced, first, by modifying the toxophore, and, second, by substituting different groups for the auxotox radical. [Pg.46]

A primary objective of chemical compatibility testing is to ensure that liner materials will remain intact not just during a landfill s operation but also through the postclosure period, and preferably longer. It is difficult, however, to predict future chemical impacts. There is no guarantee that liner materials selected for a site today will be the same as materials manufactured 20 years from now. For example, the quality of basic resins has improved considerably over the last few years. [Pg.1146]

Why are barium- and iodine-based materials selected for contrast media The production of X-ray images depends on the differences between the X-ray absorbing power of various tissues. This difference in absorbing power is called contrast and is directly dependent on tissue density. To artificially enhance the ability of a soft tissue to absorb X-rays, the density of that tissue must be increased. The absorption by targeted soft tissue of aqueous solutions of barium sulfate and iodized organic compounds provides this added density through the heavy metal barium and the heavy nonmetal iodine. [Pg.2]

The materials selected for evaluation included three materials currently being used in these applications Biomer (Thoratec Laboratories Corporation, Emeryville, CA), representative of segmented ether-type polyurethanes Avcothane-51 (Avco Everett Research Laboratory, Inc., Everett, MA), a block copolymer of 10% silicone rubber and 90% polyurethane and Hexsyn (Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, Akron, OH), a sulfur vulcanized hydrocarbon rubber that is essentially a polyhexene. Also selected, because of their easy availability, were Pellethane (Upjohn Company, North Haven, CT), an ether-type of polyurethane capable of being extruded in sheet form, and a butyl rubber formulation, compounded and molded at the National Bureau of Standards. The material thickness varied, but the sheets were generally about 1 mm thick. [Pg.534]

Although PSA is a batchwise process, by using multiple beds in a sequential manner the overall process is operated in a continuous fashion. Each bed may contain layers of different adsorbent materials selective for specific contaminants in the hydrogen gas stream to be purified. Each bed undergoes a sequence of four basic steps in a PSA cycle adsorption, depressurization, purge at low pressure, and repressurization. This sequence of cyclic operations for each bed is shown schematically for a four-bed PSA process in Figure 8.4 (Yang, 1987 Cassidy, 1980 Miller and Stocker, 1999). [Pg.290]

Our screening and testing of multicomponent capsules/beads is incomplete. However, it offers a novel approach for the material selection for immobilization devices, which permits the simultaneous control of permeability, mechanical stability, and compatibility. The alternative multicomponent systems presented herein offer new possibilities for biomaterials, particularly those employed in bio artificial organs. [Pg.71]

Although details on effects of composition and microstructure on hydrogen embrittlement in structural metals have not been fully elucidated, there are bodies of engineering data for some materials. Existing data demonstrate some clear trends that can assist in materials selection for hydrogen service. [Pg.229]
