There is really very little consistency across these environmental impact assessment methods except that the Swedish and Dutch systems rate cadmium the battery metal with the most adverse effects, while the Tellus and Ecoscarcity Methods rate mercury the most adverse battery metal. Zinc, manganese, nickel and even lead have relatively low effects except in the U.S. EPA system, which however is the one system which is most closely tied to actual quantitative assessments of enviromnental and human health toxicological end points. What is very surprising is the relatively low impact values for mercury in the Swedish and Dutch schemes given the general worldwide concern for mercury.

To cover a wider spectrum of potential environmental impacts, several indicators from different impact assessment methods were employed, as implemented in Simapro v8.0.2 global warming potential over 100 years (GWPioo) (IPCC, 2006), renewable and nonrenewable cumulative energy demand (CED) [v 1.08] (Hischier et al., 2010), ecotoxicity [USEtox vl.03] (Rosenbaum et al., 2008), agricultural land occupation (ALO) and freshwater eutrophication (EE) [ReCIPe v.1.09] (Goedkoop et al., 2013).

In this smdy the Simapro software and the ReCiPe endpoint impact assessment model were used, but other software (e.g. GaBi) and other impact assessment methods (e.g, CML 2002 Impact 2002+) are suitable for composites.

This study used the PROSUITE endpoint impact assessment method in which all impacts are categorized into five main impacts, including impact on human health, impact on social being, impact on prosperity, impact on natural environment, and impact on exhaustible resources. These impacts are then combined with normalization and weighting to obtain a single sustainability score (see the section Methodologies for Assessing Life Cycle Sustainability).
