Materials surface

The application of eddy currents in non destructive testing was very developed during the recent years. Adding to the defects characterization, actual studies deal with the metallurgical evaluation of materials. Surface processing allow to increase the material endurance and consequently its life duration. [Pg.290]

Let us consider a conductive material of conductivity o in which a long, very narrow discontinuity was machined under the examined material surface The surface examination is accomplished with a transducer with orthogonal coils, the coil parallel to the inspected surface serving as emission coil, and the coil perpendicular to the surface being the reception coil. [Pg.375]

Stainless steel develops a passive protective layer (<5-nm thick) of chromium oxide [1118-57-3] which must be maintained or permitted to rebuild after it is removed by product flow or cleaning. The passive layer may be removed by electric current flow across the surface as a result of dissinulat metals being in contact. The creation of an electrolytic cell with subsequent current flow and corrosion has to be avoided in constmction. Corrosion may occur in welds, between dissimilar materials, at points under stress, and in places where the passive layer is removed it may be caused by food material, residues, cleaning solutions, and bmshes on material surfaces (see CORROSION AND CORROSION CONTROL). [Pg.361]

Surface modification of a contact lens can be grouped into physical and chemical types of treatment. Physical treatments include plasma treatments with water vapor (siUcone lens) and oxygen (176) and plasma polymerization for which the material surface is exposed to the plasma in the presence of a reactive monomer (177). Surfaces are also altered with exposure to uv radiation (178) or bombardment with oxides of nitrogen (179). Ion implantation (qv) of RGP plastics (180) can greatiy increase the surface hardness and hence the scratch resistance without seriously affecting the transmission of light. [Pg.107]

The external surface of the pump housing was covered with large tubercles up to 2 in. (5 cm) in diameter (Fig. 3.32). Tubercles had hard, black, stratified shells, enveloping reddish-brown internal material. Surfaces beneath tubercles were corroded to a depth of as much as in. (0.54 cm). Regions below the tubercles were graphitically corroded (see Chap. 17). [Pg.63]

Three types of anodic protection can be distinguished (1) impressed current, (2) formation of local cathodes on the material surface and (3) application of passivating inhibitors. For impressed current methods, the protection potential ranges must be determined by experiment (see information in Section 2.3). Anodic protection with impressed current has many applications. It fails if there is restricted current access (e.g., in wet gas spaces) with a lack of electrolyte and/or in the... [Pg.474]

Modulation Spectroscopy has proven to be an important characterization method for semiconductors and semiconductor microstructures. The rich spectra contain a wealth of information about relevant materials, surfaces and interfrces, as well as device characteristics. In general, the apparatus is relatively simple, compact (except EBER), inexpensive (except EBER), and easy to use. One of the main advantages of Modulation Spectroscopy is its ability to perform relevant measurements at room... [Pg.397]

Binding them in a matrix which minimizes the waste material surface exposed to solvent. [Pg.176]
