Materials surface coating

The overwhelming number of dendrimer-related reports flooding the chemical arena, particularly, in the last five years, has made it a difficult task to summarize all important developments in one treatise. The restricted scope of this chapter - supramolecular chemistry within dendritic materials - denotes the utilitarian character to the unique infrastructure of these materials. Surface coatings and attachments to molecular spheres should possess a common theme respective of their frameworks, and thus there should be less differentiation between the mode of construction but rather what is the surface functionality. 

The use of fine powders for industrial applications has become an increasingly important factor in aerosol technology. Finely divided powders now are used for the reinforcement of materials, surface coatings, and laminated, polycomponent materials. 

Floor-mounted roll coaters are noted for their extreme efficiency with large webs and flat sheets. Their waste is also very low, less than 2 percent in some cases. Several types are available because no single model or type of roll coater is best for all the variables of the material surface, coating formulation, and end use. Table 17.2 summarizes the roll coaters that are commonly used, and these are illustrated in Fig. 17.8.

The principal chemical markets for acetylene at present are its uses in the preparation of vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, and 1,4-butanediol. Polymers from these monomers reach the consumer in the form of surface coatings (paints, films, sheets, or textiles), containers, pipe, electrical wire insulation, adhesives, and many other products which total biUions of kg. The acetylene routes to these monomers were once dominant but have been largely displaced by newer processes based on olefinic starting materials. 

Tetrasodium hexakiscyanoferrate decahydrate [14434-22-1], Na4[Fe(CN)g] IOH2O, or yellow pmssiate of soda, forms yellow monoclinic crystals that are soluble in water but insoluble in alcohol. It is slightly efflorescent at room temperature, but the anhydrous material, tetrasodium hexakiscyanoferrate [13601 -19-9], Na4[Fe(CN)J, is obtained at 100°C. The decahydrate is produced from calcium cyanide, iron(II) sulfate, and sodium carbonate in a process similar to that for the production of K4[Fe(CN)g] 3H2O. It is used in the manufacture of trisodium hexakiscyanoferrate, black and blue dyes, as a metal surface coating, and in photographic processing. 

Various types of surface coating materials can be used with sohd fiber paperboard to achieve desired package properties. The coatings and treatments described for cormgated paperboard apply to sohd fiber paperboard as weU. Various solvent and aqueous-based polymeric emulsion coatings are also commonly used (see Emulsions).
