2 Thiophene-based materials on gold and silver surfaces strong molecule-substrate interactions 

Organosulfur compounds have been widely investigated among compounds of interest for the formation of self-assembled monolayers on gold [57]. The latter are relevant for a number of applications such as biosensing, nanopatterning and molecular electronic devices. The study of fundamental processes in the formation of SAMNs of organosulfur compounds is of primary importance to realize functional molecular layers. 

The adsorption on Au(l 11) of thiophene deposited from an ethanol solution had been previously investigated by Feher s group [61]. They found that thiophene self-assembled into sets of domains rotated by 120° with respect to each other, following the symmetry of the Au(lll) substrate.
