Practically, the broad general area of industtial antimicrobial concerns is divided into process and preservative disciplines. Figure 1 shows the key appHcation areas of process and companion-preservative uses, and Table 1 indicates the various market segments. 

Lubrication oil additives represent another important market segment for maleic anhydride derivatives. The molecular stmctures of importance are adducts of polyalkenyl succinic anhydrides (see Lubrication and lubricants). These materials act as dispersants and corrosion inhibitors (see Dispersants Corrosion and corrosion control). One particularly important polyalkenyl succinic anhydride molecule in this market is polyisobutylene succinic anhydride (PIBSA) where the polyisobutylene group has a molecular weight of 900 to 1500. Other polyalkenes are also used. Polyalkenyl succinic anhydride is further derivatized with various amines to produce both dispersants and corrosion inhibitors. Another type of dispersant is a polyester produced from a polyalkenyl succinic anhydride and pentaerythritol [115-77-5]. 

Explosion-bonded metals are produced by several manufacturers in the United States, Europe, and Japan. The chemical industry is the principal consumer of explosion-bonded metals which are used in the constmction of clad reaction vessels and heat-exchanger tube sheets for corrosion-resistant service. The primary market segments for explosion-bonded metals are for corrosion-resistant pressure vessels, tube sheets for heat exchangers, electrical transition joints, and stmctural transition joints. Total world markets for explosion-clad metals are estimated to fluctuate between 30 x 10 to 60 x 10 annually. 

The key to this microutility market segment, therefore, is financial in addition to technological. It is likely that any significant success in this market will result directiy from the creation of a suitable financing strategy.
