The use of vitamins in humans consumes ca 40% of vitamins made worldwide. The majority of the vitamins, particularly in countries outside the United States, are used in animal husbandry. It is well estabUshed (21) that vitamins are critical to animal productivity, especially under confined, rapid growth conditions. Newer information (22) has shown that vitamin E added to catde feed has the additional effect of significantly prolonging beef shelf life in stores. Additional appHcations of vitamins exist. A small but growing market segment involves cosmetics (qv) (23). The use of the chemical properties of the vitamins, particularly as antioxidants (qv) in foods and, more recently, in plastics (vitamin E (24)), has emerged as a growing trend. 

Tourism and agro-tourism applications in areas that are not serviced by a reliable electricity network, are considered as a market segment of great interest for autonomous power systems. Tourism settlements in such areas are usually small, since they do not offer more than five rooms and in order to supply their residents with electricity they only have two alternatives i) consider a connection to the main electricity grid, which can be costly when the distance that has to be covered is high and ii) install an autonomous power system. Especially in agro-tourism... 

Due to the small size of agro-tourism settlements the size of the installed power system is similar to that of the rural housing market segment, which has been analysed in previous sections. Nevertheless, there are other tourism applications such as mral tourism refuges and rural hostel services, usually located in mountains, which require higher amounts of energy.

Forcing a Relatively Small Market Segment to Buy AFVs Will Not Work... 

Industrial boilers use TDF to generate steam. There are 17 facilities that use scrap tires, although it is usually in a limited degree. In this market segment, the use of TDF is primarily a function of the solid wastes available and represents about 2-5% of the fuel supply. Still, tires are used because the economics and the emissions are favorable. A small increase in the use of TDF should occur in the industrial boiler market. 

The dominant process in this market segment is the Spheripol process by Basell. Similar to the dominance achieved by the Phillips process in HOPE, roughly one-third of the world s polypropylene is produced using the Spheripol process. The Spheripol process uses loop reactors. A small loop reactor is used to prepolymerize the catalyst the main polymerization, for homopolymer or random copolymer, takes place in one or two loop reactors. For impact copolymer production, a gas-phase reactor is required after the loop reactor because of the limited solubility of ethylene in liquid propylene. A typical flow diagram of the Spheripol process is shown in Figure 2.40. 

This is the simplest form of structure and is normally used by small, entrepreneurial companies involved in producing one or a few related products for a specific market segment. Functional structures group people on the basis of their common expertise and experience, or because they use the same resources. The approach is to structure the company, or areas of responsibility that relate to traditional business functions such as marketing, manufacturing, engineering and finance. 

Specialised Industry - companies have many means to differentiate, each offering a high payoff. A company manufacturing specialised machinery for a selected market segment might be an example. Small companies are potentially as profitable as larger ones in such a market.
