Management factors

A program of research has been supported for several years by the United Kingdom Health Safety Executive (HSE) to address the effects of sociotechnical factors on risk in the CPI. The initial emphasis of this work was to develop a methodology so that chemical process quantitative risk analysis (CPQRA) would take into accotmt the effects of the quality of the management factors of plant being assessed. This work has been described in a series of publications (e.g., Bellamy et al., 1990 Hurst et al., 1991 Geyer et al., 1990 and Hurst et al., 1992).

We measured many properties of the soil, the growing trees and the apples after harvest and after storage. The results were studied in relation to the management factors and mutual correlations were computed. This procedure enabled us to contribute to the validation of the IQC (step 3, Table 5.3), the validation of new parameters (steps 5 and 6) and the evaluation of orchard management. Details of the methods and results of the apple series are described elsewhere (Bloksma et al., 2001, 2004). Here, we mention only some of the results that are relevant to the IQC.

Conservative is used to define orchard and management factors that once introduced cannot, or are extremely difficult to, change or require substantial additional investment to do so. Among these are soil and other site-specific conditions, choice of variety/cultivar and rootstock, planting density and tree canopy formation, system stabilisation measures at orchard set-up and installations to buffer extreme events. 

Thus, P may not have a larger impact on phytodiversity than other nutrients per se, but can gain it due to its availability relative to other resources. This explains also why the relation between P and phytodiversity may be overruled easily by other factors, e.g., management factors like heavy grazing (Hill et al. 2005 Dorrough et al. 2006) or environmental factors like soil salinity (Theodose and Roths 1999).

Cannibalism is another problem reported in organic laying hens. It is known that several factors are involved in triggering cannibalism in a flock. These include breed, feed composition, rearing environment, external parasites and other management factors (Berg, 2001).

Whereas technical or inherent elements can be studied by experiments which allow, at least to some extent, reasonable extrapolations, it is difficult to scientifically evaluate the role and impact of management factors and also the value of product use strategies. Since the publication of the first mathematical model studies by Kable and Jeffery (181, several computer-based models for resistance management have been developed (9, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23. 

The development of control strategies to reduce E. coli 0157 H7 will require the identification of biological, environmental, and/or management factors that affect its incidence in cattle and their production environments. Research investigations and epidemiological studies have identified a number of risk factors or management practices that can or may contribute to the occurrence of this pathogen, and that may be exploitable to reduce its numbers, persistence, and transmission in cattle.
