Relative Bio availability

Although thera-peutic equivalence is assured if two formulations are bioequivalent, the therapeutic equivalence of two bioinequivalent formulations can be judged only within a specific clinical context (23). Thus, if we ordinarily treat streptococcal throat infections with a 10-fold excess of penicillin, a formulation having half the bioavailability of the usual formulation would be therapeutically equivalent, since it still would provide a 5-fold excess of antibiotic. 

On the other hand, bioinequivalence of cyclosporine formulations, and of other drugs that have a narrow therapeutic index, could have serious therapeutic consequences.

An indication of what one might eventually expect to obtain for a generalized pattern of relative bio-availability for the actinides of interest in nuclear fuel cycles is shown in Table IV. This represents a recent data set in which concentration ratios have been obtained for all five actinides in tissues of a vertebrate (used as human food) from a single aquatic ecosystem (Pond 3513 at ORNL) comparisons are thus facilitated. The sublingual administration of methyltestosterone was examined by Alkalay et al. The sublingual tablet produced a 50%i higher relative bio availability when compared with the oral tablet or oral solution. The increased bioavailability was attributed to the avoidance of first-pass hepatic metabolism due to absorption from the sublingual vasculature and lymphatics.
