As in any reexamination of the field, chemists and chemical engineers should ask serious questions about current practices. Does the divisional structure in academic chemistry departments discourage multi-investigator research, or encourage artificial distinctions Are the traditional divisions still the best structure... [Pg.181]

The immobilisation of homogeneous catalysts is an intensely investigated research area in academia and industry aimed at finding novel and sustainable solutions to the most fundamental problem of the art of homogeneous catalysis the simple separation of products and catalyst and direct catalyst reuse with a minimum of additional—or even better—no further working... [Pg.91]

The Catalysis Concept of Enamine Activation Enamine catalysis is one of the most thoroughly investigated research areas within organocatalysis. The... [Pg.326]

Psychopharmacology research in children is designed to generate new knowledge and improve the outcomes for children who suffer from clinical conditions that warrant treatment. Such research relies upon partnerships among investigators, research partnerships, and society. But such research entails risks, so principles must be identified and carefully considered to simultaneously advance knowledge and protect research par-... [Pg.743]

In mammalian cells NO is produced by the oxidation of the terminal guanidino nitrogen of L-arginine (L-arg) by nitric oxide synthase (NOS). According to patent literature, NOS inhibitors have been one of the most intensively investigated research areas in industry of the last couple of years. [Pg.556]

The work conducted in Belgium up to 1914 was mostly under the direction of Wetteyne (Ref 21, p 554). His, and later investigators research led to the development of successful permissible expls, known now as "explosifs SGP (explosifs secGrite-gri sou-poussiere) (See Vol 2, p B29-R of this Encycl). Many of these expls are exported... [Pg.229]

The development of highly efficient asymmetric catalysts is one of the most intensively investigated research fields today.1 Catalytic asymmetric reactions are extremely powerful in terms of the practicality and atom economy.2 The power of asymmetric catalysis is rapidly growing, so as to be applicable to syntheses of natural products with complex structures. We call total syntheses using catalytic asymmetric reactions in key steps catalytic asymmetric total syntheses . In this chapter, we describe our recent success in catalytic asymmetric total syntheses of (-)-strychnine and fostriecin. Both of the total syntheses involve catalytic asymmetric carbon-carbon bond forming reactions using bifunctional catalysts developed in our group3 as key steps. [Pg.347]

The selection of a lead compound and the development of a synthetic pathway for its preparation (see Chapters 10 and 11) is not the only consideration at the start of an investigation. Researchers must also devise suitable in vivo and in vitro tests to assess the activity and toxicity of the compounds produced. There is no point in carrying out an expensive synthetic procedure if at the end of the day it is impossible to test the product. [Pg.58]

Tertiary a-hydroxy acids are key components of a number of muscarinic receptor antagonists, such as oxybutynin (Ditropan as a racemic mixture), which is prescribed for the treatment of urinary incontinence and exhibits classical antimuscarinic side effects, such as dry mouth.88 Because biological results suggested that (.SVoxybutynin displayed an improved therapeutic profile compared to its racemic counterpart, a general and practical entry to optically pure key subunit (S)-90 became of primary importance.89 In their investigations, researchers at Sepracor considered the advantage... [Pg.474]

This review has shown that most studies on barley starches have been focused on understanding the fine structures, particle size distribution, chemical composition, gelatinization properties and susceptibility towards enzyme hydrolysis. However, there is a dearth of information on the rheological and retrogradation characteristics of barley starches from different cultivars. Furthermore, the response of small and large barley starch granules towards physical and chemical modification needs investigation. Research in the above areas is underway in our laboratories. It is hoped that this study may improve the utilization of different types of barley starches for specific products within the food and paper industry. [Pg.625]

Few plant species upon which man depends for his food, clothing, shelter, and aesthetic pleasure have been investigated. Researchers have dealt principally with the identification of air pollutants, the effects they have on plants, and some of the conditions under which these effects may vary. One of these conditions, to use the term broadly, is the genetic state of a species with respect to its reaction to air pollution. We know that some species show resistance, but there is a considerably greater number about which we know little or nothing. [Pg.87]
