Machine parts

Acetal resins may also be fabricated into rod, slab, and other shapes by profile extmsion. Extmded shapes are frequendy further machined. Parts fabricated by mol ding or extmsion are ammenable to all typical postforrning processes. [Pg.59]

A constant temperature is required for close-tolerance measuring, gauging, machining, or grinding operations, to prevent expansion and contraction of machine parts, machined products, and measuring devices. In this instance a constant temperature is normally more important than the temperature level. Relative humidity is secondary in importance but should not go above 45% to minimise formation of a surface moisture film. [Pg.357]

The temperature and humidity should be maintained at comfort conditions consistent with the operator s expected level of activity in order to minimise perspiration. Constant temperature and humidity may also be required in machine rooms to prevent the etching or corrosion of machine parts. If perspiration causes only minor damage to the product and results in few rejects, then inside design conditions at 27°C and 40% rh are satisfactory. Where even small amounts of perspiration cause extreme damage to precision-machined parts and result in a high amount of rejects, inside design conditions of 21°C and 40% rh are recommended. [Pg.357]

The automotive industry is the principal user of P/M forgings, primarily for transmission and differential components, but also for engine parts. Other markets are in power tools and farm machinery. Cost effectiveness is generally the reason for substituting P/M forgings for conventionally forged, cast, or machined parts. [Pg.184]

Copper and nickel can be alloyed with zinc to form nickel silvers. Nickel silvers are ductile, easily formed and machined, have good corrosion resistance, can be worked to provide a range of mechanical properties, and have an attractive white color. These alloys are used for ornamental purposes, as sHverplated and uncoated tableware and flatware in the electrical iadustry as contacts, connections, and springs and as many formed and machined parts (see Electrical connectors). [Pg.6]

Polysulfones also offer desirable properties for cookware appHcations, eg, microwave transparency and environmental resistance to most common detergents. Resistance to various sterilizing media (eg, steam, disinfectants, and gamma radiation) makes polysulfones the resin family of choice for many medical devices. Uses in the electrical and electronic industry include printed circuit boards, circuit breaker components, connectors, sockets, and business machine parts, to mention a few. The good clarity of PSF makes it attractive for food service and food processing uses. Examples of appHcations in this area include coffee decanters and automated dairy processing components. [Pg.469]

Cohesity. Many materials stick together and adhere to machine parts, depending on their condition, particle size, and temperature. [Pg.140]

The effect of World War 11 was very drastically felt in the sugar industry. Raw materials, machine parts, and maintenance items needed to maintain sugar processing were diverted to the war industry. Many sugar industry experts were conscripted into the armed forces. In the European theater of war, factories and agriculture were destroyed. At the end of World War 11 sugar production barely totalled 19,162,000 t/yr. [Pg.40]

The anticorrosion properties of lanolin have been utilized over a considerable period, and the product has the status of a temporary corrosion inhibitor (186) (see Corrosion and corrosion control). There is probably potential for greater use of the poorer grades of lanolin for long-term storage and protection of machine parts. Other uses have been reviewed in detail (182). [Pg.355]

Chromium carbide is important in powder preparations designed for thermal spray apphcations of corrosion and wear-resistant coatings on tool and machine parts. Lower carbon carbides of chromium are important in hardfacing tods and electrodes for weld-apphed ovedays on machine wear surfaces. However, these carbides are usually formed in situ from Cr and C in the rod and not added as preformed carbides. The properties of Ci2C2 are hsted in Table 2. [Pg.451]

Martensitic Stainless Steels. The martensitic stainless steels have somewhat higher carbon contents than the ferritic grades for the equivalent chromium level and are therefore subject to the austenite—martensite transformation on heating and quenching. These steels can be hardened significantly. The higher carbon martensitic types, eg, 420 and 440, are typical cutiery compositions, whereas the lower carbon grades are used for special tools, dies, and machine parts and equipment subject to combined abrasion and mild corrosion. [Pg.127]

Medical uses for Udel resin include surgical trays, nebulizers, flow controllers for blood, and respiration regulators. Transportation applications center around automotive fuse housings, electrical connectors, and switches. Electrical and electronic end uses include coil bobbins, housings, connectors, bushings, capacitor film, and business machine parts. EinaHy, water, heater dip tubes, milking machine parts, pollution control equipment, and some filtration membranes are made. [Pg.272]

Water contamination is a constant threat. The sources of water are many—atmospheric condensation, steam leaks, oil coolers, and reservoir leaks. Rusting of machine parts and the effects of rust particles in the oil system are the major results of water in oil. In addition, water forms an emulsion and, combined with other impurities, such as wear metal and rust particles, acts as a catalyst to promote oil oxidation. [Pg.550]

Carbide-based cermets have particles of carbides of tungsten, chromium, and titanium. Tungsten carbide in a cobalt matrix is used in machine parts requiring very high hardness such as wire-drawing dies, valves, etc. Chromium carbide in a cobalt matrix has high corrosion and abrasion resistance it also has a coefficient of thermal expansion close to that of steel, so is well-suited for use in valves. Titanium carbide in either a nickel or a cobalt matrix is often used in high-temperature applications such as turbine parts. Cermets are also used as nuclear reactor fuel elements and control rods. Fuel elements can be uranium oxide particles in stainless steel ceramic, whereas boron carbide in stainless steel is used for control rods. [Pg.10]

A totally-enclosed water-cooled machine is a totally enclosed machine which is cooled by circulating water, the water or water conductors coming in direct contact with the machine parts. [Pg.649]

Fluid power systems have developed rapidly over the past thirty-five years. Today, fluid power technology is used in every phase of human existence. The extensive use of hydraulics to transmit power is due the fact that properly constmcted fluid power systems possess a number of favorable characteristics. They eliminate the need for complicated systems of gears, cams, and levers. Motion can be transmitted without the slack or mechanical looseness inherent in the use of solid machine parts. The fluids used are not subject to breakage as are mechanical parts, and the mechanisms are not subjected to great wear. [Pg.584]

Because a film of grease remains where it is applied for much longer than a film of oil, it provides better protection to bearing and other surfaces that are exposed to shock loads or sudden changes of direction. A film of grease also helps to prevent the corrosion of machine parts that are idle for lengthy periods. [Pg.878]

Temporary corrosion preventives are products designed for the short-term protection of metal surfaces. They are easily removable, if necessary, by petroleum solvents or by other means such as wiping or alkaline stripping. Some products for use in internal machine parts are miscible and compatible with the eventual service lubricant, and do not, therefore, need to be removed. [Pg.880]
