Maintenance items

The effect of World War 11 was very drastically felt in the sugar industry. Raw materials, machine parts, and maintenance items needed to maintain sugar processing were diverted to the war industry. Many sugar industry experts were conscripted into the armed forces. In the European theater of war, factories and agriculture were destroyed. At the end of World War 11 sugar production barely totalled 19,162,000 t/yr.

Procurement of maintenance items not held in store should be initiated by the maintenance group. Bucket elevators, which are a very economical option where straight elevation without horizontal displacement is required they completely enclose the conveyed material and therefore eliminate dust emissions. A variation of the vacuum system just described utihzes a rotary airlock on the bottom of the hopper in place of the flapper assembly. The airlock seals the vacuum in the hopper while, at the same time, allows the material to be discharged into the silo. The primary advantage of this system is the fact that it conveys continuously rather than in intermittent batches. Its drawbacks are higher cost than the flapper discharge, airlocks tend to be a high-maintenance item located on top of the silos, and the tendency of some materials to break up or smear when passed through the rotor.

Because documentation is a dynamic tool, as the facility changes, so too must the documentation. It k common for a technician to improve conditions by reworking a circuit or two. Most often this fixes a problem that should be corrected as a maintenance item. But sometimes, it plants a time bomb wherein a future change, based on missing or incomplete documentation of the previous work, will cause... 

Every piece of equipment or part of a system that needs maintenance, for example, oiling and/or cleaning, testing, replacement of worn parts, or evaluation, should be reviewed.
