Nickel-silvers

The metal is employed to form numerous alloys with other metals. Brass, nickel silver, typewriter metal, commercial bronze, spring bronze, German silver, soft solder, and aluminum solder are some of the more important alloys. [Pg.54]

Gobalt occurs in the minerals cobaltite, smaltite, and erythrite, and is often associated with nickel, silver, lead, copper, and iron ores, from which it is most frequently obtained as a by-product. It is also present in meteorites. [Pg.83]

A third group includes silver—nickel, silver—cadmium oxide, and silver—graphite combinations. These materials are characterized by low contact resistance, some resistance to arc erosion, and excellent non sticking characteristics. They can be considered intermediate in overall properties between silver alloys and silver or copper—refractory compositions. Silver—cadmium oxide compositions, the most popular of this class, have wide appHcation in aircraft relays, motor controllers, and line starters and controls. [Pg.190]

Copper and nickel can be alloyed with zinc to form nickel silvers. Nickel silvers are ductile, easily formed and machined, have good corrosion resistance, can be worked to provide a range of mechanical properties, and have an attractive white color. These alloys are used for ornamental purposes, as sHverplated and uncoated tableware and flatware in the electrical iadustry as contacts, connections, and springs and as many formed and machined parts (see Electrical connectors). [Pg.6]

Uses. Copper—nickel—iron alloys, UNS C 96200 (90 10 copper nickel) and UNS C 96400 (70 30 copper nickel), are used in corrosion-resistant marine (seawater) appHcations. UNS C 96400 is used for corrosion-resistant marine elbows, flanges, valves, and pumps. Leaded nickel—brass, UNS C 97300 (12% nickel-silver), is used for hardware fittings, valves, and statuary and ornamental castings. [Pg.251]

The leaded nickel bronzes, UNS 97600 (20% nickel-silver) and UNS C 97800 (25% nickel-silver), are used for marine, ornamental, and sanitary castings, and valves and pumps, and for ornamental hardware, sanitary castings, valves, and musical instmment parts, respectively. [Pg.251]

Copper alloys include brasses (Cu-Zn alloys), bronzes (Cu-Sn alloys), cupronickels (Cu-Ni alloys) and nickel-silvers (Cu-Sn-Ni-Pb alloys). [Pg.195]

The non-ferrous alloys include the misleadingly named nickel silver (or German silver) which contains 10-30% Ni, 55-65% Cu and the rest Zn when electroplated with silver (electroplated nickel silver) it is familiar as EPNS tableware. Monel (68% Ni, 32% Cu, traces of Mn and Fe) is used in apparatus for handling corrosive materials such as F2 cupro-nickels (up to 80% Cu) are used for silver coinage Nichrome (60% Ni, 40% Cr), which has a very small temperature coefficient of electrical resistance, and Invar, which has a very small coefficient of expansion are other well-known Ni alloys. Electroplated nickel is an ideal undercoat for electroplated chromium, and smaller amounts of nickel are used as catalysts in the hydrogenation of unsaturated vegetable oils and in storage batteries such as the Ni/Fe batteries. [Pg.1146]
