Lubricants myristic acid

Chrome complexes of stearic and myristic acids provide water and aqueous stain resistance, dimensional stabUity, and lubricity. The products may also enhance the appearance and durabUity of leather. The chrome complex reacts with the leather molecules to form a permanent bond. 

Esterification with monoalcohol, such as isopropanol and myristic acid, yields isopropyl myristate, an important cosmetic ingredient. Glyceryl monoesters and wax esters find application as food emulsifiers, mold release agents, and lubricants for the plastic industry.

For plasticized PVC the most commonly employed lubricants are normal and dibasic salts of stearic acid. Myristic acids, parafftn and other waxes, low molecular weight polyethylene and certain esters such as ethyl palmitate could also be used. 

About 50% of isopropanol use is to produce acetone. Other important synthetic uses are to produce esters of many acids, such as acetic (isopropyl acetate, solvent for cellulose nitrate), myristic, and oleic acids (used in lipsticks and lubricants). Isopropylpalmitate is used as an emulsifier for cosmetic materials. Isopropyl alcohol is a solvent for alkaloids, essential oils, and cellulose derivatives. 

Alternatively, a sequence of pervaporation steps can be used to remove the reaction water (Figure 4.10). The reaction solution is pumped through a first fixed-bed reactor and afterwards a pervaporation module is used to remove the water at 80 °C. The solution is subsequently cooled to 60 °C and passed through a second reactor unit. After the next pervaporation step the water content is lowered to 0.2 wt%. Dry shaving is a process using electric shavers. In contrast to wet shaving, when using an electric razor the hair should remain dry and stiff. This requires removal of the moisture film and sebum from the face. This may be achieved by using a lotion based on an alcohol solution. A lubricant such as fatty acid ester or isopropyl myristate may be added to the lotion. Alternatively a dry talc stick may be used that can absorb the moisture and sebum from the face. 

Fatty acids, which act mainly as external lubricants. The higher-molecular-weight acids have a greater affinity to PVC. Stearic acid is the one mostly used because of its low price and its availability. Commercial materials used as lubricants usually contain from 40 to 97% stearic acid and the rest is made of palmitic, myristic, and oleic acids.
