Solubilizers liquid

Beckman, Brennecke, and their research groups were the first to realize that the combination of SCCO2 and an ionic liquid can offer special advantages. They observed that, although SCCO2 is surprisingly soluble in some ionic liquids, the reverse is not the case, with no detectable ionic liquid solubilization in the CO2 phase. On the basis of these results they described a method to remove naphthalene quantitatively from the ionic liquid [BMIM][PFg] by extraction with SCCO2 [5]. Sub-... [Pg.281]

As an alternative to distillation, extraetion with a eo-solvent that is poorly mis-eible with the ionie liquid has often been used. There are many solvents that can be used to extract product from the ionic liquid phase, whether from a monophase reaction or from a partially miscible system. Typical solvents are alkanes and ethers (15). Supercritical CO2 (SCCO2) was recently shown to be a potential alternative solvent for extraction of organics from ionic liquids (22). CO2 has a remarkably high solubility in ionic liquids. The SCCO2 dissolves quite well in ionic liquids to facilitate extraction, but there is no appreciable ionic liquid solubilization in the CO2 phase in the supercritical state. As a result, pure products can be recovered. For example, about 0.5 mol fraction of CO2 was dissolved at 40°C and 50 bar pressure in [BMIMJPFe, but the total volume was only swelled by 10%. Therefore, supercritical CO2 may be applied to extract a wide variety of solutes from ionic liquids, without product contamination by the ionic liquid (29). [Pg.160]

Liquid solubilizers act by reducing the dielectric constant properties of the solvent system, thereby reducing the electrical conductance capabilities of the solvent and increasing the solubility of hydrophobic or non-polar drugs. Lanoxin, Valium, and Nembutal are examples of commercially available sterile solutions containing cosolvent solubilizers. A popular combination consists of 40% propylene glycol and 10 /o ethanol in water. [Pg.1273]

For wet oxidation of biological material reagents such as nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, perchloric acid, or potassium persulfate have been successfully used and possess certain experimental advantages. In general, methods of wet oxidation can be performed directly in the counting vial and do not require any expensive or special equipment. For highly colored specimen (liver tissue, blood, plant leaves)and for those tissue resistant to liquid solubilizers the wet oxidation technique is widely applicable and reliable. [Pg.4]

The cleaning process proceeds by one of three primary mechanisms solubilization, emulsification, and roll-up [229]. In solubilization the oily phase partitions into surfactant micelles that desorb from the solid surface and diffuse into the bulk. As mentioned above, there is a body of theoretical work on solubilization [146, 147] and numerous experimental studies by a variety of spectroscopic techniques [143-145,230]. Emulsification involves the formation and removal of an emulsion at the oil-water interface the removal step may involve hydrodynamic as well as surface chemical forces. Emulsion formation is covered in Chapter XIV. In roll-up the surfactant reduces the contact angle of the liquid soil or the surface free energy of a solid particle aiding its detachment and subsequent removal by hydrodynamic forces. Adam and Stevenson s beautiful photographs illustrate roll-up of lanoline on wood fibers [231]. In order to achieve roll-up, one requires the surface free energies for soil detachment illustrated in Fig. XIII-14 to obey... [Pg.485]

Typically, soHd stabilizers utilize natural saturated fatty acid ligands with chain lengths of Cg—C g. Ziac stearate [557-05-1/, ziac neodecanoate [27253-29-8] calcium stearate [1592-23-0] barium stearate [6865-35-6] and cadmium laurate [2605-44-9] are some examples. To complete the package, the soHd products also contain other soHd additives such as polyols, antioxidants, and lubricants. Liquid stabilizers can make use of metal soaps of oleic acid, tall oil acids, 2-ethyl-hexanoic acid, octylphenol, and nonylphenol. Barium bis(nonylphenate) [41157-58-8] ziac 2-ethyIhexanoate [136-53-8], cadmium 2-ethyIhexanoate [2420-98-6], and overbased barium tallate [68855-79-8] are normally used ia the Hquid formulations along with solubilizers such as plasticizers, phosphites, and/or epoxidized oils. The majority of the Hquid barium—cadmium formulations rely on barium nonylphenate as the source of that metal. There are even some mixed metal stabilizers suppHed as pastes. The U.S. FDA approved calcium—zinc stabilizers are good examples because they contain a mixture of calcium stearate and ziac stearate suspended ia epoxidized soya oil. Table 4 shows examples of typical mixed metal stabilizers. [Pg.550]

Aromatic steroids are virtually insoluble in liquid ammonia and a cosolvent must be added to solubilize them or reduction will not occur. Ether, ethylene glycol dimethyl ether, dioxane and tetrahydrofuran have been used and, of these, tetrahydrofuran is the preferred solvent. Although dioxane is often a better solvent for steroids at room temperature, it freezes at 12° and its solvent effectiveness in ammonia is diminished. Tetrahydrofuran is infinitely miscible with liquid ammonia, but the addition of lithium to a 1 1 mixture causes the separation of two liquid phases, one blue and one colorless, together with the separation of a lithium-ammonia bronze phase. Thus tetrahydrofuran and lithium depress the solubilities of each other in ammonia. A tetrahydrofuran-ammonia mixture containing much over 50 % of tetrahydrofuran does not become blue when lithium is added. In general, a 1 1 ratio of ammonia to organic solvents represents a reasonable compromise between maximum solubility of steroid and dissolution of the metal with ionization. [Pg.25]

Transition metal catalysis in liquid/liquid biphasic systems principally requires sufficient solubility and immobilization of the catalysts in the IL phase relative to the extraction phase. Solubilization of metal ions in ILs can be separated into processes, involving the dissolution of simple metal salts (often through coordination with anions from the ionic liquid) and the dissolution of metal coordination complexes, in which the metal coordination sphere remains intact. [Pg.70]

An example for a partially known ternary phase diagram is the sodium octane 1 -sulfonate/ 1-decanol/water system [61]. Figure 34 shows the isotropic areas L, and L2 for the water-rich surfactant phase with solubilized alcohol and for the solvent-rich surfactant phase with solubilized water, respectively. Furthermore, the lamellar neat phase D and the anisotropic hexagonal middle phase E are indicated (for systematics, cf. Ref. 62). For the quaternary sodium octane 1-sulfonate (A)/l-butanol (B)/n-tetradecane (0)/water (W) system, the tricritical point which characterizes the transition of three coexisting phases into one liquid phase is at 40.1°C A, 0.042 (mass parts) B, 0.958 (A + B = 56 wt %) O, 0.54 W, 0.46 [63]. For both the binary phase equilibrium dodecane... [Pg.190]

In general, solubilization of appropriate substances in a solution of reversed micelles forming a solid, liquid, or gel core within the reversed micelle is the preliminary step to realize systems easily handled and interesting both from the theoretical and the practical points of view. [Pg.478]

Entrapment of enzymes within reversed micelles can be achieved simply by dissolving the biopolymer, pure or solubilized in an appropriate solvent, in a solution of reversed micelles or by extraction from an immiscible liquid phase [13,165,166]. [Pg.488]

Moreover, stable liquid systems made up of nanoparticles coated with a surfactant monolayer and dispersed in an apolar medium could be employed to catalyze reactions involving both apolar substrates (solubilized in the bulk solvent) and polar and amphiphilic substrates (preferentially encapsulated within the reversed micelles or located at the surfactant palisade layer) or could be used as antiwear additives for lubricants. For example, monodisperse nickel boride catalysts were prepared in water/CTAB/hexanol microemulsions and used directly as the catalysts of styrene hydrogenation [215]. [Pg.491]
