Direct performance

Partly with the high stakes in mind, changes have been made in U.S. reactor equipment and operation since the TMI accident to reduce the chance of another accident. The results of these changes are reflected in the predictions of probabilistic risk assessments and by a variety of direct performance indicators. For example, in one measure for U.S. reactors, since the pre-TMI days there has been a reduction of more than a factor of 100 in the number of precursors to potential core damage accidents, as reported by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (Muley, 1990 Belles et al., 1998). [Pg.80]

The above represent accessories which do not directly perform blasting operations, but which are essential for the efficient and safe use of blasting explosives. For the explosives industry and for the user they are as important as the blasting explosives themselves. [Pg.94]

The main difficulty of this method is the unknown value of the term X (l + p /3) and therefore the value for pure water is often used. On the other hand, it has the advantage that the measurement is directly performed on a solution of the Gd(III) complex and that the rotational correlation time of the Gd-coordinated water oxygen vector is actually determined 12)-,... [Pg.197]

Furthermore, we have shown in Refs. [28, 112] that in mulfiqubit quantum computation, it is vital to consider all possible modulations and fields, and not only those that directly perform a quantum logic gate. Thus, while usually one only requires the optimization of the fields applied to perform the gate, we have stressed that the gate fidelity can be greatly increased if one also applies and optimizes all other possible fields. [Pg.208]

Electron-electron collisions induce further thermalization and transport excitation energy from the 1 ph modes to 2ph and higher configurations. The collision rate is however much suppressed at low excitation energies due to Pauli blocking of the final scattering states. The relaxation times from these electron-electron collisions thus strongly depend on cluster s temperature. The evaluation of these times in metal clusters is not yet. standard. We rely here on a first attempt, in this direction, performed at a semi-classical level... [Pg.89]

For clarity, the test has been described in terms of generating a 90 per cent Cl and using just one limit, but with most statistical packages the practical approach is to select an option for the direct performance of a one-sided test. You will also have to indicate the direction of change that is to be tested for. The programme will then generate a 95 per cent confidence limit (either upper or lower, as requested) and aP value should also be produced. Typical output is shown in Table 10.2. [Pg.125]

After fitting data to the various rate expressions that have been derived it will often appear that several models do not differ much in their mean SSR value. Statistical tests, such as an F-test, cannot be directly performed on these mean SSR values since they are based on the same data set and are therefore not statistically independent. Therefore, other approaches have been devised to allow further selection between the possible candidates, and some of them are mentioned below [9],... [Pg.319]

One-pot synthesis of ( )-alkenes has been directly performed from nitromethane by a radical process (Liu and Yao, 2001). In fact, the strategy is to react P-nitrostirene (3) as shown in Figure 2.1, in situ prepared from aromatic aldehydes (1) with nitromethane (2) in the acetic acid solution with a catalytic amount of ammonium acetate at 70-100°C, with triethylborane in the biphase of diethyl ether and aqueous solution in the presence of oxygen in air as radical initiator, to generate (4). [Pg.55]

This activity in small projects is directly performed by the Owner. The Project Manager is also expected to be the Construction Manager. Frequently, the work is delegated to another engineer or to a member of the plant staff, but the overall responsibility remains with the Project Manager. [Pg.10]

As mentioned before, the C.M. function could be performed, depending on the construction approach, by the general contractor, by an independently retained C.M., or by the Owner. In the latter option, the Project Manager becomes also the Construction Manager. Construction management entails many other activities, some of which are the responsibility of the contractors directly performing the work and others are the responsibility of the C.M. [Pg.188]

As with alumina, ceria has several roles to play within the catalyst formulation. It has some effect on stabilizing alumina surface area at high temperatures, and it is also capable of stabilizing the dispersion of platinum in these systems, important because the effect is particularly marked in the 600-800°C region, where many present-day catalysts operate. In addition, ceria allows two other more directly performance-related phenomena to take place oxygen storage and the water gas shift reaction shown in Eq. (9) ... [Pg.99]

As already pointed out, the most direct consequence of a reduction in the nanocrystallite size on the electronic structure of semiconducting materials is a pronounced increase in the band gap due to the quantum confinement effect. While there are several ways to quantitatively understand this phenomenon from a theoretical standpoint, the experimental determination of the band gap variation as a function of size is most directly performed by ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy, with the experimental absorption threshold corresponding to the direct band gap in the material. As the band gap shifts to higher energy, the blue-shift in the absorption edge signals the formation of progressively smaller sized nanocrystals. Therefore, UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy has played an immensely important role in the study of these systems and we discuss the essential aspects in Section 11.3. [Pg.372]

The producers connected with injectors in more directions performed better than those with fewer connections. [Pg.195]

A straight forward application of approximation IV to calculate W (r) maps is quite exacting, because the calculation of the potential contribution due to the couple distributions xt li 1S time consuming when directly performed on the Slater functions. This fact clashes with the basic philosophy of semiempirical methods, which is to sacrifice some reliability to speed up the calculations. It has been shown40) that expansion of each Slater-type orbital into three Gaussian functions (3G expansion41)) gives a substantial improvement of the computational times of W (r), without an appreciable reduction in the quality of the results. [Pg.139]

Directions Perform this experiment in the hood. Measure out into an evaporating dish 8 c.c. of water and add to it 10 c.c. of concentrated sulphuric acid. (Do not add the water to the acid.) While the solution is cooling set up an apparatus like the one for the preparation of chlorine, Experiment 21. Put 10 grams of sodium chloride into the test tube and pour the acid down the thistle tube. When the salt has become thoroughly moistened with the acid, heat the test tube with a low flame, holding the burner in your hand. To determine when the bottle has been filled, hold a piece of wet blue litmus paper at its mouth. Do not consider the bottle full when the first test is obtained but continue generating the gas until it overflows in some quantity. Collect four bottles full and cover them with glass plates. [Pg.67]

Directions Perform these experiments in the hood, (a) Pour a few drops of phosphorus trichloride into a dry test tube. [Pg.192]

When large volumes of water are sampled, the extraction of analytes is directly performed in the field water is passed through a cartridge containing a suitable stationary phase, for instance XAD-2 resin. Generally, before the preconcentration cartridge, a filtering system, with a pore size lower than 1 /rm, is positioned, and the particulate matter recovered is stored and analyzed separately. [Pg.687]

Finally, although not directly performance-related, safety monitors are also worth a mention as they provide reassurance to the athlete and coach or supporting team and can enable survival, particularly for disabled athletes and those involved in impact sports, extreme sports and sports in remote locations. The Riddell Insite helmet for American football is an example of a safety system where impact sensors alert the sideline team when a certain threshold has been reached (Riddell, 2014). [Pg.171]
