The DOE and private industry have learned many lessons from years of experienee in site remediation. This book will refer to seleeted lessons learned from the DOE, the Army Corps of Engineers, private industry, and personal experienee. After reading this book the reader should have a better understanding of how to interpret the hazardous waste requirements to make sure eomplianee is maintained at a high level for eaeh site-speeifie aetivity. Over and above eomplianee, the authors eneourage the development of health and safety programs to help build a sound and workable safety eulture that ean be utilized aeross all boundaries. 

This indicates that error management comprises two strategies proactive methods are applied to prevent errors occurring, and reactive strategies are used to learn lessons from incidents that have occurred and to apply these lessons to the development of preventive measures. This hook focuses on learning lessons from incidents to lower the risk of future major incidents. It is important to use a structured approach to incident investigation that huilds on proven and recognized techniques this makes it easier to develop consistent understanding from incidents and to communicate insights and results from investigations effectively. 

The bottom left-hand cell in Figure 5.1 thus represents managers for whom development is inadvertent. They leave their experience to unfold as the dictates of their Job demand and subsequently only reflect on such experiences as they feel warrant attention. For these managers, lessons from experience are more often than not tacitly rather than explicitly drawn. This is the normal everyday learning from everyday experience that we are all no doubt familiar with.

Our work in the development of artificial enzymes, described here and in Chapter 2, has established that catalysts can be made that will achieve excellent defined geometrically directed functionalizations and, furthermore, that the combination of binding groups with coenzyme analogs leads to powerful catalysts for some reactions. Before you set off, a word on terminology. We talk about project planning . This is an unfortunate and misleading set of words - but everybody uses them. You can plan when you know what you have to do - to follow lessons from two to four, for example. You cannot plan when you do not yet know what to do you cannot plan in the beginning of a development project. You can only think of what you must learn and discover - perhaps speculate would be a better word. Because this is important, it is repeated in Figure N2-1. We will try to help a little with this first assignment, but realize that every project is different, and that it remains your problem. These notes are not instructions. 

A management review will usually be conducted periodically, with one or more validation reports used as feedback on the overall validation program. Although shown as the last phase of management cycle, reviews can and should take place throughout validation. The review endeavors to draw out lessons from the validation conducted to date, to consider the impact of any regulation developments, and to report any recommendations. The overall aim is the continuous improvement of the company s validation capability. 

In spite of the lessons from Jari, other large scale plantation development plans continue in the Brazilian Amazon. If developed, the Grande Carajas Program would consume large areas of tropical forest in the eastern Amazon in order to obtain charcoal for the smelting of pig-iron from the Carajas mines. The area of Eucalyptus plantation to produce the required amount of charcoal would be over 700,000 ha-more than 10 times the area of E. deglupta already cultivated in the Jari Project (Feamside 1989).

Concepts for this book came from my experiences as a youth in Chatham, Ontario, Canada, overlapped with American and British university education, research training, and professional development as a health scientist. Life lessons from all three countries led to my interest in nutrition, phytochemicals, and how super fruits can offer a solution for healthier dietary practices.

Last, we successfully draw lessons from international experience in controlling outdoor air pollution. In the same way, it is very necessary to strengthen cooperation with developed coimtries, and to make use of their experience and technology to solve indoor air pollution problems because these countries suffered from similar problem during their periods of rapid development.
