As with all books, this book has its limitations and shortcomings which are attributable to the editor alone. We do not, for example, attempt to cover legislative issues in general, although specific references are made where appropriate. Readers concerned with ensuring compliance with their local statutes should make separate enquiries with the proper authority. Water, effluent and other environmental matters are similarly not covered in any detail, as there are volumes dedicated to these topics.

Because of the diversity of practice locales and specialties found within pharmacy, there is no one professional association of which all pharmacists are members. The existence of multiple professional associations, each with its own unique focus, is an effective way to meet many of the professional needs of a highly differentiated practitioner population. However, it is important that these organizations have a means to collaborate effectively on major professional, regulatory, and legislative issues that confront pharmacy. Recent legislation issues in Europe have involved the end-of-life disposal of vehicles and electrical goods. Food contact legislation has been updated. Plasticisers, brominated flame retardants and biocides have also been the subject of EU legislation. The EU s proposals on the testing of chemicals are expected to create difficulties for the plastics and additives industries, although compensations may become apparent. 

Safety performance in a company involves two aspects the safety program and the safety process. The safety program deals with compliance and legislative issues. The safety process involves those factors within the organization that either help or hinder the safety program. A company cannot have an optimal safety performance without both of these elements in place, with the safety process complementing the safety program. 

The terms water quality criteria and water quahty standards are often used interchangeably. Indeed, the dictionary definition implies a similarity of meaning. However, it is useful in this field to distinguish between standards , as implying statutorily imposed limits, and criteria which imply desirable quality characteristics related to a particular water usage and based on scientific evidence without reference to political or legislative issues [1]. Major competitive materials for PP and their crude advantages/disadvantages over PP are given in Table 3. This table is for broad comparison only. Legislative Issues. The European Union s RoHS and WEEE directives (the WEEE directive addresses waste electronic equipment and recycling requirements) affect not only the lead used in printed circuits, but the flame retardants used in the resin system as well.The RoHS directive restricts the use of specific types of brominated flame retardants. The restricted class of compounds consists of polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybromi-nated biphenyl oxides (PBBOs), also called polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The generic structure of these compounds is shown in Fig. 7.13. Specific compounds within these classes of flame retardants can vary in their toxicity, and given the dynamic nature of legislative initiatives, it is important to check the current status of these compounds when making decisions on what materials to use. 

Establishing an extensive network of contacts with the relevant authorities and chemical companies at European and national level, they have created a unique forum for dialogue between industry and the authorities on the ongoing legislative issues.
