Material categories

Hybrid materials are not really a clearly defined material category but result from a design method that associates, by integrating them closely, one or more polymers on the one hand and, generally, one or more other materials, which provide one or more functionalities difficult or impossible to obtain with only one polymer.

Steinhardt, like Mackay before (see, Section 9.7), felt the need for redefinition of materials categories [144], His suggestions now included the newly discovered quasicrystals. Steinhardt has succinctly characterized the crystals, glassy materials, and quasicrystals as follows ... 

In other respects, we can consider zeohte membranes as pertaining to the ceramic material category. Indeed zeolites are classified for the most part as microporous, crystalline silico-aluminate stmctures with different alumininum/silicon ratios. Thus, the chemical compositions are close to those of ceramic oxide membranes, in particular of microporous silica and alumina membranes. On the other hand, zeohtes are crystalline materials and they have a structural porosity very different from microporous amorphous silica [124]. Zeohte membranes are well adapted to the separation of gases, in particular H2 from hydrocarbons, but these membranes are not very selective for the separation of mixtures of noncondensable gases. 

The principal material categories discussed in this article are illustrated in Fig. 1. Categories shown are fatty chain acids, salts, alcohols or amines, oils and waxes, phospholipids, glycolipids, neutral lipids, and non-linear chain compounds, such as sterols.

The research of the conductivity phenomena of the new materials category of the class of intrinsically conductive polymers proceeded from the paradigm that the transport phenomena were linked to the properties of the polymer chain. This began with the hypothesis that polyacetylene was an ideal candidate for the search for solitons. The oxidation, which was incorrectly called doping , of the chain of the original non-conductive polymer made possible a kind of folding over of the conjugated double bonds, thereby the flow of electrons was set in motion and the intrinsical conductive polymer was bom.

Note These hazard levels are not to be confused with the DOE classification of nuclear waste into high-level, low-level, mixed low-level, transuranic and 1 le(2) byproduct material categories. These nuclear waste categories are established by DOE Order 5820.2A, which can be viewed online at http //www.directives.doe.gov (Dec. 2005). See DOE/EM (1997) for more information on nuclear waste. Figure 14.3 indicates how architects rate the PTFE performance in regards to six fagade material categories. Architects appear to be positive towards the aesthetic appeal and design versatility of PTFE (similar to ETFE) with all interviewees indicating an acceptable to excellent attitude.
