Lacquers are clear, synthetic coatings, most often cellulose-based (such as nitrocellulose often modified with a resin, cellulose acetate, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, and benzyl cellulose) that dry through evaporation of a solvent. Lacquers can be made from a liquid lacquer base, a starting point for speciality lacquers (e.g., automotive) which most often contain the film-forming material in concentrated solution with or without other components. The base may be up to 25% nitrocellulose. [Pg.176]

Poly(vinyl chloride) is soluble in few solvents (tetrahydrofuran, cyclohexanone, etc.). An acetone-soluble polymerizate can be obtained by extensive post-chlorination of the PVC and this product contains 63-64% chlorine. Chlorinated PVC s are used as adhesives, lacquer bases, and industrial fibers. The chlorination occurs in solution at 60-100°C or in the gel state at 50°C. In the gel-state chlorination, PVC is swollen with chlorohydrocarbons and irradiated in aqueous suspension with UV light. Since CH2 groups are more easily chlorinated than CHCl groups, the polymer contains approximately equal proportions of- CHCl—CHCl and -f H2—CHCl groups. At an equal chlorine content, the PVC that was chlorinated as a gel possesses a higher glass-transition temperature, probably because of the stronger block copolymer character. [Pg.917]

While vulcanization of NR and GP was the first purposeful modification of natural polymers, the first man-made polymer was nitrocellulose, NC, discovered by Braconnot in 1833 (see Appendix I). Several commercial products followed, e.g., Collodion (lacquers based on alcohol-ether solution), Parkesine (the first thermoplastic material hot rolled and formable into variety of shapes), Ivorite (used as a substitute for ivory). Celluloid (camphor plasticized NC). Cellulose acetate, CA, was introduced in 1869 by Schutzenberger. Casein crosslinking by formaldehyde resulted in a 1885-patent hy Kritsche and Spitteler for what later became known as Galalith, a horn-like material quite successfully used even today as an imitation of ivory and porcelain [Seymour, 1982 1989]. [Pg.9]

In the 1830s and 1840s, European chemists discovered that cotton dipped in nitric acid produced an explosive material. This early form of nitrocellulose was too unstable to be used safely in explosives production. Scientists later converted nitrocellulose into a stable base for improved gunpowder known as smokeless powder. Further experiments revealed that a combination of nitrated natural fibers with ether and alcohol produced a nonexplosive solution that hardened into a film. This discovery led to a wide array of end uses for nitrocellulose including plastics, lacquers, and photographic film. [Pg.1823]

Thermoplastics in the form of a lacquer have poorer mechanical strength than the thermosetting resins but are more easily removed, should this prove necessary. Polyvinyl acetate and polyurethane are good examples of this class of consolidants, particularly on wrought iron artefacts. Many of the copper and copper-based alloys, such as bronzes and brasses recovered from the Mary Rose, were consolidated with a solution of acrylic resin dissolved in toluene (Incralac). [Pg.159]

Properties. The solid polyamide resins are alcohol soluble and if properly formulated can supply some degree of hydrocarbon compatibility. Thus, they can be applied from solvent solution. However, they also can be applied as hot melts or from water dispersions. Water-based forms known as suspensoids have been described (12). Solid polyamides also may be finely divided for use as powders. The films are characterized by resistance to moisture, moisture vapor transmission, grease, and oils. They are resistant to many solvents and chemicals including aliphatic hydrocarbons and mineral and vegetable oils. They do not resist lacquer-type solvents and alcohols. They have a high degree of flexibility and maintain their flexibility upon aging.
