Lacquers are clear, synthetic coatings, most often cellulose-based (such as nitrocellulose often modified with a resin, cellulose acetate, methyl cellulose, ethyl cellulose, and benzyl cellulose) that dry through evaporation of a solvent. Lacquers can be made from a liquid lacquer base, a starting point for speciality lacquers (e.g., automotive) which most often contain the film-forming material in concentrated solution with or without other components. The base may be up to 25% nitrocellulose. [Pg.176]

This includes organic fibrous materials on a cellulose base such as paper, pressboard, cotton, cotton cloth and natural silk etc., impregnated with lacquers or immersed in an insulating liquid. The impregnation or immersion ensures that the oxygen content of the air does not affect... [Pg.221]

Two of these types are lacquers, giving quick drying to the dust-free state at ambient temperature, but at the expense of lower film build. Nitrocellulose-based lacquers are preferred in some European countries and acrylic lacquers in North America. Nitrocellulose is plasticised with nondrying alkyds, polyester and liquid plasticiser. Acrylics are plasticised internally by use of plasticising monomers with methyl methacrylate and by solvent plasticiser. Acrylics give better durability and nitrocellulose gives easier application. [Pg.628]

With these lacquers, nitrocellulose-based primer-surfacers are used. As well as liquid plasticisers, a wide range of materials are used as plasticising resins short oil alkyds, maleinised oils, ester gum, rosin and bodied castor oils. Pigmentation is usually inert. Thermoplastic acrylics are often preferred under acrylic lacquers these are based on acrylic resins and cellulose acetate butyrate. [Pg.628]

Class B Flammable liquids Fires in flammable liquids, combustible liquids, petroleum greases, tars, oils, oil-based paints, solvents, lacquers, alcohols, and flammable gases. [Pg.395]

Use and exposure Toluene is a clear, colorless liquid with an aromatic odor. It is a natural constituent of crude oil and is produced from petroleum refining and coke-oven operations. It is used in household aerosols, nail polish, paints and paint thinners, lacquers, rust inhibitors, adhesives, and solvent-based cleaning agents. Toluene is also used in printing operations, leather tanning, and chemical processes. Benzene and other PAHs are common... [Pg.67]

Analyze problem 21 for multiple steady states. To do this, solve this problem using the shooting technique for the given set of parameters. Consider the behavior of a thin sheet of viscous liquid emerging from a thin slot at the base of a converging channel in connection with a method of lacquer application known as curtain coating. [6] The dimensionless governing equations and boundary conditions for the velocity are ... [Pg.290]
