The Italian chemical literature, though an important source of information, has found only a limited interest among American chemists. This is in part explainable by the linguistic barriers, and by the fact that it has suffered from a lack of centralized documentation and indexing in Italy. Italian chemical literature seems sure to become of increasing importance to the American chemist. [Pg.500]

Cocco et al. (1997) evaluated cause-specific mortality among workers of a lead-smelting plant in Italy. The cohort consisted of 1,388 men whose vital status was followed from January 1950, or 12 months after the date of hiring, whichever was later, through December 1992. For this period, reference mortality rates of the Italian male population were available from the mortality data base of the World Health Organization (WHO). The deaths from all causes, all malignant neoplasms, diseases of the... [Pg.48]

Three thousand people were in Camp I. Then the second camp swelled the prison population to 14,000 — Dr. ter Meer was never to share his lunch with them. During the first two years of construction, reports came to his office of daily trainloads of "workers" coming to Auschwitz. Then Camp III and Camp IV were built, both nearer the buna factory than the other two camps. Then at last, in 1943, Ter Meer made a third visit to Auschwitz. Returning to Frankfurt, he had himself transferred to Italy, where he became plenipotentiary for the Italian chemical industries. Ambros appeals followed him "More workers are needed." "Herr Doctor Ambros is asking for assistance at Auschwitz."... [Pg.163]

By the sudden and unexpected death of Professor Gabriello Illuminati on 22nd January 1986 the Italian chemical community has lost one of its most distinguished and authoritative members. Three other studies were conducted to investigate the preventive potential of tamoxifen. One in Italy (Veronesi et al. 1998), one at the Royal Marsden Hospital, United Kingdom (Powles et al. 1998), and a multicentric international study (IBIS 2002). The British study was the smallest in size (2471 participants) but concentrated on women with a high incidence of family history and consequently presented a higher number of breast cancers. The Italian trial included only women with previous hysterectomy and, accordingly, around 50% had also undergone bilateral oophorectomy. The family risk was low only 15% had a first-degree relative affected by breast cancer. Both European studies permitted concurrent HRT, and 26% of the participants in the British trial received HRT while on study and 42% had ever received HT for menopausal symptoms. Neither of the studies showed any positive effect of the treatment with tamoxifen on the incidence of breast cancer. Reasons for this lack of effect can be different for each trial. [Pg.259]

Prison as it turned out was in an old convent near Monopoli in Southern Italy. Mark and his comrades had a relatively good life. Certainly they would have prefered to have been home, but most of them, profitably, used the time to study. Italian was the most popular subject, but a few, like Mark, included French and English. Very few, however, joined Mark in extending their studies to include chemistry. [Pg.13]

Diazoxide (II) has been known since the early 1960 s (9.) and must be considered as a well known lead. It bears a structural resemblance to the diuretic agent, chlorothiazide (XIX) but, unlike chlorothiazide, it is non-diuretic. Analogs have been prepared by scientists at Schering (10) and by a group in Italy (11). The Italian group reported that compound XX lowers blood pressure and heart rate intravenously in rats but causes... [Pg.59]
