Sulfur Dioxide and Sulfites. Sulfur dioxide [7446-09-5], SO2, sodium bisulfite [15181-46-1], NaHSO, and sodium metabisulfite [23134-05-6] ate effective against molds, bacteria, and certain strains of yeast. The wine industry represents the largest user of sulfites, because the compounds do not affect the yeast needed for fermentation. Other appHcations include dehydrated fmits and vegetables, fmit juices, symps and concentrates, and fresh shrimp (79). Sulfites ate destmctive to thiamin, and cannot be used in foods, such as certain baked goods, that ate important sources of this vitamin. 

The second PPS process practiced commercially was developed by Kureha Chemical Industry Company. Kureha has built a commercial PPS plant in Nishiki, Fukushima (46), and has formed a joint venture, Fortron Industries, with Hoechst Celanese (47). Fortron Industries has completed a commercial PPS plant at Hoechst Celanese s plant in Wilmington, North Carolina. Fortron Industries represents the only other PPS producer in North America. Figure 3 shows a flow diagram for the Kureha PPS process. 

The chemical industry represents a 455-billion-dollar-a-year business, with products ranging from cosmetics, to fuel products, to plastics, to pharmaceuticals, health care products, food additives, and many others. It is diverse and dynamic, with market sectors rapidly expanding, and in turmoil in many parts of the world. Across these varied industry sectors, basic unit operations and equipment are applied on a daily basis, and indeed although there have been major technological innovations to processes, many pieces of equipment are based upon a foundation of engineering principles developed more than 50 years ago. 

On April 6, 1994, OSHA published its final revisions to the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) standard in the Federal Register, Vol. 59, No. 66. With the implementation date of July 5, 1994, the regulation, applicable to the general industry, represented major changes in the selection and use of PPE. OSHA believes that through compliance with the PPE standard, safety statistics that track worker safety will improve. These improvements will add up to 712,000 lost workdays and 95,000 recordable cases.

Polymer products synthesized in laboratories and in industry represent a set of individual chemical compounds whose number is practically infinite. Macro-molecules of such products can differ in their degree of polymerization, tactici-ty, number of branchings and the lengths that connect their polymer chains, as well as in other characteristics which describe the configuration of the macromolecule. In the case of copolymers their macromolecules are known to also vary in composition and the character of the alternation of monomeric units of different types. As a rule, it is impossible to provide an exhaustive quantitative description of such a polymer system, i.e. to indicate concentrations of all individual compounds with a particular chemical (primary) structure. However, for many practical purposes it is often enough to define a polymer specimen only in terms of partial distributions of molecules for some of their main characteristics (such as, for instance, molecular weight or composition) avoiding completely a...

Bureau of Chemistry Carl Alsberg, Wisconsin pharmacologist Arthur Loevenhart (engaged at the time in chemical warfare work), Acting Director of the Mellon Institute for Industrial Research E. R. Weidlein, and two industry representatives, Frank Eldred of Eli Lilly and Company and D. W. Jayne of the Barrett Company. The addresses were published in the December 1918 issue of the Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry, and were also reprinted and circulated to numerous individuals whose views were solicited (21).

FDA engages proactively and consistently with Indian regulatory counterparts and industry representatives to better accomplish the FDA s domestic mission to assure the safety, efficacy, and quality of FDA-regulated products.
