For a more comprehensive review of ceramics and ceramic processing, tire reader is referred to otlrer sources [3, 4 and 5]. [Pg.2761]

In order to improve parallelism and load balancing, a hybrid force-spatial decomposition scheme was adopted in NAMD 2. Rather than decomposing the nonbonded computation into regions of space or pairwise atomic interactions, the basic unit of work was chosen to be interactions between atoms... [Pg.477]

A polymer is a macromolecule that is constructed by chemically linking together a sequent of molecular fragments. In simple synthetic polymers such as polyethylene or polystyrer all of the molecular fragments comprise the same basic unit (or monomer). Other poly me contain mixtures of monomers. Proteins, for example, are polypeptide chains in which eac unit is one of the twenty amino acids. Cross-linking between different chains gives rise to j-further variations in the constitution and structure of a polymer. All of these features me affect the overall properties of the molecule, sometimes in a dramatic way. Moreover, or... [Pg.439]

Much of modem life revolves around the use of the decimal system of numbers, although for many purposes it is far from ideal. This system (dec = ten) takes 10 as the basic unit of operation, and we say that we are working to base 10. However, the base 10 is not the only one possible the previous British and many other countries coinage was founded on a base of 12. The meaning of a base for purposes of calculation is illustrated in Figure 42.1. [Pg.303]

Commercial production and utilization of ozone by silent electric discharge consists of five basic unit operations gas preparation, electrical power supply, ozone generation, contacting (ie, ozone dissolution in water), and destmction of ozone in contactor off-gases (Fig. 1). [Pg.497]

Dyes and Pigments. Several thousand metric tons of metallated or metal coordinated phthalocyanine dyes (10) are sold annually in the United States. The partially oxidized metallated phthalocyanine dyes are good conductors and are called molecular metals (see Semiconductors Phthalocyanine compounds Colorants forplastics). Azo dyes (qv) are also often metallated. The basic unit for a 2,2 -azobisphenol dye is shown as stmcture (11). Sulfonic acid groups are used to provide solubiHty, and a wide variety of other substituents influence color and stabiHty. Such complexes have also found appHcations as analytical indicators, pigments (qv), and paint additives. [Pg.172]

The basic unit of the flavone-type dyes is 2-phenyIbenzopyrone (14) which unsubstituted is flavone [525-82-6], isoflavone [574-12-9] is (15) and flavonol [577-85-5] is (16). [Pg.398]

Multiples or sub-multiples of basic units indicate the unit suffixes typically used with materials data. [Pg.297]

Silicon atoms bond strongly with four oxygen atoms to give a tetrahedral unit (Fig. 16.4a). This stable tetrahedron is the basic unit in all silicates, including that of pure silica (Fig. 16.3c) note that it is just the diamond cubic structure with every C atom replaced by an Si04 unit. But there are a number of other, quite different, ways in which the tetrahedra can be linked together. [Pg.170]

A complete seal has two basic units the seal head unit and the seal seat. The seal head unit consists of the housing, the end-face member, and the spring assembly. The seal seat is the mating member that completes the precision-lapped face combination that provides the seal. [Pg.503]

The chemical industry represents a 455-billion-dollar-a-year business, with products ranging from cosmetics, to fuel products, to plastics, to pharmaceuticals, health care products, food additives, and many others. It is diverse and dynamic, with market sectors rapidly expanding, and in turmoil in many parts of the world. Across these varied industry sectors, basic unit operations and equipment are applied on a daily basis, and indeed although there have been major technological innovations to processes, many pieces of equipment are based upon a foundation of engineering principles developed more than 50 years ago. [Pg.542]

Gene The basic unit of inheritance a sequence of DNA coding that can be translated by the cell machinery into a sequence of amino acids linked to form a protein. [Pg.903]

While static Monte Carlo methods generate a sequence of statistically independent configurations, dynamic MC methods are always based on some stochastic Markov process, where subsequent configurations X of the system are generated from the previous configuration X —X —X" — > with some transition probability IF(X —> X ). Since to a large extent the choice of the basic move X —X is arbitrary, various methods differ in the choice of the basic unit of motion . Also, the choice of transition probability IF(X — > X ) is not unique the only requirement is that the principle... [Pg.561]

This method is based on the Rasmussen stepladder model described in Chapter 2. It was first described in Embrey (1986). The basic units of CADET are the critical actions or decisions (CADs) that need to be made by the operator usually in response to some developing abnormal state of the plant. A CAD is defined in terms of its consequences. If a CAD fails, it will have a significant effect on safety, produchon or availability. [Pg.180]

The thermodynamically most stable polymorph of boron is the /3-rhombohedral modification which has a much more complex structure with 105 B atoms in the unit cell (no 1014.5 pm, a 65.28°). The basic unit can be thought of as a central Bn icosahedron surrounded by an icosahedron of icosahedra this can be visualized as 12 of the B7 units in Fig. 6.1b arranged so that the apex atoms form the central Bn surrounded by 12 radially disposed pentagonal dishes to give the Bg4 unit shown in Fig. 6.3a. The 12 half-icosahedra are then completed by means of 2 complicated Bjo subunits per unit cell,... [Pg.143]

Important differences distinguish the molybdenum and tungsten systems. In aqueous solution, equilibration of the molybdenum species is complete within a matter of minutes whereas for tungsten this may take several weeks it also transpires that whereas the basic unit of most isopolymolybdates is an MOg octahedron with a pair of cis-terminal oxygens, that of the isopolytungstates is more commonly an MOg octahedron with only one terminal oxygen. The two must therefore be considered separately. [Pg.1010]

The basic unit of energy used in accelerator physics is the electron volt (eV), which is the energy acquired by an electron when accelerated through a potential difference of one volt. An electron volt is a very small unit compared to an energy unit such as a food calorie (kilocalorie). A kilocalorie is about 26 billion trillion times as large as an eV. Common multiples of eV arc McV (niillion cV), GcV (billion cV), and TcV (trillion eV). [Pg.936]

Packed towers are used as contacting equipment for gas-liquid and liquid-liquid systems. Figures -1A and B present a cross-section of a typical unit. The shell is usually q lindrical, although square wooden, light metal, or reinforced plastic towers are used. The basic unit consists of ... [Pg.230]

The utilities required for steam jet refrigeration operation often determine the selection of these units, between manufacturers and between types of refrigeration. As the chilled water temperature off of the unit approaches 32°F, the cost of the basic unit and its steam and cooling water requirements rise rapidly. [Pg.295]

Two systems of units are in common usage in mechanics. The first, the SI system, is an absolute system based on the fundamental quantities of space, time, and mass. All other quantities, including force, are derived. In the SI system the basic unit of mass is the kilogram (kg), the basic unit of length (space) is the meter (m), and the basic unit of time is tbe second (s). The derived unit of force is the Newton (N), which is defined as the force required to accelerate a mass of 1 kg at a rate of 1 m/s-. [Pg.139]
