Case Studies in Environmental Medicine Taking an Exposure History—The importance of taking an exposure history and how to conduct one are described, and an example of a thorough exposure history is provided. Other case studies of interest include Reproductive and Developmental Hazards Skin Lesions and Environmental Exposures Cholinesterase-Inhibiting Pesticide Toxicity and numerous chemical-specific case studies. [Pg.7]

Cardiovascular Effects. In one case study, a woman who had accidentally consumed about 20 mL of trichloroethylene was reported to have suffered a myocardial infarction within 2 hours of ingestion (Morreale 1976). In two other case studies, men who ingested 350 and 500 mL of trichloroethylene had ventricular arrhythmias that persisted for up to 3 days (Dhuner et al. 1957). The arrhythmias were described as ventricular tachycardia with extrasystoles from different ventricular foci. Cardiac arrhythmia was also reported in a women who drank an unknown amount of trichloroethylene (Perbellini et al. 1991). [Pg.85]

Hepatic Effects. Hepatic failure was reported in the case of an accidental ingestion of trichloroethylene that led to an acute overdose (Kleinfeld and Tabershaw 1954). In other case studies, blood analyses revealed no hepatic injury in a man who drank several tablespoons of trichloroethylene (Todd 1954) or in women who drank about 20 mL (Morreale 1976) or an unknown quantity (Perbellini et al. 1991). Self-reported liver problems were not increased among persons in the trichloroethylene subregistry who were exposed to trichloroethylene in their drinking water (ATSDR 1994 Burg et al. 1995). [Pg.87]

In a systematic study of the addition of cyclohexyl radicals to a-substi-tuted methyl acrylates, Giese (1983) has shown that the captodative-substituted example fits the linear correlation line of log with o-values as perfectly as the other cases studied. Thus, no special character of the captodative-substituted olefin is displayed. More recently, arylthiyl radicals have been added to disubstituted olefins in order to uncover a captodative effect in the rate data (Ito et aL, 1988). Even though a-A, A -dimethyl-aminoacrylonitrile reacts fastest in these additions, this observation cannot per se be interpreted as the manifestation of a captodative effect. Owing to the lack of rate data for the corresponding dicaptor- and didonor-substituted olefins, it is not possible to postulate a special captodative effect. The result confirms only that the A, A -dimethylamino-group, as expected from its a, -value, enhances the addition rate. In the sequence a-alkoxy-, a-chloro-, a-acetoxy- and a-methyl-substituted acrylonitriles, it reacts fastest. [Pg.170]

Two case studies are presented here that show equipment purchases that were performed by two different companies. The first case study followed the principles and strategy rules previously discussed, and the equipment allowed for high rates, minimal installation time, and a low-cost product. The other case study did not follow the strategies, and the installation and process were flawed by numerous problems. The consequences of not having the proper equipment will be detailed along with the additional costs associated with the mistake. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. Taube (18) has shown that two different chemical shifts in the 170 NMR spectrum of C Ot2- solutions are observed, in the approximate ratio of non-bridging O to bridging O.
