The inspection is undertaken primarily to ensure the continuous safe operation of the equipment and to direct repairs or changes in operation if questions of safety or adequacy for service arise. To be of significant value, an inspection must be carried out thoroughly and the results and conclusions compared with those of previous inspections. Local or state authorities may demand annual inspection and provide for penalties if a violation of the appropriate industrial pressure vessel or administrative code is found. [Pg.612]

The European Commission has bowed to government and industry pressure, and made a series of amendments to water down its proposed European Union chemical policy. Proposals to test polymers under the policy s Reach programme have been all but scrapped, and the number of intermediates requiring testing has been drastically reduced. The concessions mean that the number of chemicals to be tested under Reach has fallen from about 30,000 to about 10,000. Some polymers may have to be registered under the revised version of Reach, but only after a review of the risks they pose, and taking into account the impact on competitiveness, innovation and protection of human health and the environment. EUROPEAN COMMISSION... [Pg.40]

To meet shareholders expectations, U.S. and European pharmaceutical companies typically focus on leveraging products to manipulate their volume, price, and marketing portfolio in ever-changing equations to boost earnings. However, current industry pressures threaten the success of these traditional strategies. [Pg.42]

Approximately 5 months after the meeting, in the summer of 1984, Leber sent a formal letter to all neuroleptic manufacturers, suggesting a revision of the proposed class warning label. By then, almost surely in response to industry pressure, the proposed language had already been watered down. Without mentioning any figures, Leber s proposed label stated that TD would develop in a substantial portion of patients treated with neuroleptics (P. Leber, unpublished letter, 1984, p. 3). The meaning of substantial was left up to interpretation. [Pg.368]

In the absence of a laboratory or industrial pressure vessel, catalytic hydrogentransfer is a viable alternative. Here, the nitro compound is stirred in a solvent with a catalyst, commonly 1% platinum on carbon, in the presence of a hydrogen donor such as hydrazine, sodium formate (sodium methanoate) or methylcyclohexene (Scheme 7.6). In the case of hydrazine, interaction at the catalyst surface produces the reductant, hydrogen, and nitrogen. Toluene is the by-product when methylcyclohexene is used. [Pg.84]

In the future, more transparency is needed with regard to the evaluation carried out by the Commission. For both old and new Member States, the evaluation criteria for the total quantity need to be more evident. There will always be Member States who consider the reduction of emissions a greater priority than others. If these Member States cannot be sure that other Member States with other priorities will not be permitted to interpret the Directive broadly when setting the total amount, they will think twice about endangering the competitiveness of their industry by ambitious allocations. (And let s not forget that industry pressure for more allowances can only be expected to be stronger and more effective after the lessons of the first allocation process.)... [Pg.264]

Legislative activity at the state level was widespread in this period. Some states followed New York s approach of setting water-quality standards and issuing permits others adopted the method of case-by-case analysis that chemical manufacturers favored. Pennsylvania strengthened its controls in 1945 and then retreated under industry pressure two years later. Ohio emulated California in 1951 the state created a Water Pollution Control Board whose seemingly vast powers were so encumbered by procedural fetters and technical hurdles that it was rendered impotent in practice.37... [Pg.116]

In some industries, special material characteristics, such as heat or pressure sensitivity, toxicity, and reactivity must be considered. These parameters are particularly important in the pharmaceutical industry. Pressure agglomeration has only limited applicability for heat- or pressure-sensitive materials. Toxicity may limit the appeal of tumble agglomeration because of the difficulty to contain dust. [Pg.457]

In the framework of a research program of national interest, electrokinetic remediation was applied to two different sea sediments dredged from industrial harbors located in Northeastern Italy (namely, sediment V) and Southwestern Sardinia (namely, sediment S). Both areas were subjected for several years to industrial pressure of chemical and mining type, and the analysis performed on the two sediment samples indicated significant heavy metal content high contents of As and Zn (181 and 3720mg/kg, respectively) were detected in sediment V, as were Pb and Zn (4970 and 5210mg/kg, respectively) in sediment S (see Table 12). [Pg.155]
