Warning label

Caustic soda is classified as a corrosive material by the DOT and DOT regulations and specifications must be followed for handling, labeling, and transportation in containers. Warning labels are recommended for containers of caustic soda solutions and anhydrous caustic soda by the MCA (79). The DOT identification number is UN1824 for 50 or 73% Hquid, and UN1823 for anhydrous caustic. 

Toxicity. Antimony has been found not to be a carcinogen or to present any undue risk to the environment (9). However, because antimony compounds also contain minor amounts of arsenic which is a poison and a carcinogen, warning labels are placed on all packages of antimony trioxide.

At the time, it was the only commercially available nonnutritive sweetener, and pubflc outcry led to a delay of the ban, which was officially withdrawn ia 1991. Instead, the FDA required that warning labels be placed on all foods that contained the iagredient. Although sacchatin is heat stable, the pubflc debate over its safety, as well as the fact that approximately one-third of the population perceives it to have a bitter aftertaste, has limited its use. 

Legislation to stay the ban has been passed in the U.S. Congress periodically. In December, 1991, the FDA withdrew its proposed ban. AH saccharin-containing packaged products are required to carry a warning label indicating that saccharin has been determined to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
