Standards, water quality

Water Quality Standards. Water quaUty standards are usually based on one of two primary criteria, stream standards or effluent standards. Stream standards are based on dilution requirements for the receiving water quaUty based on a threshold value of specific pollutants or a beneficial use of the water. Effluent standards are based on the concentration of pollutants that can be discharged or on the degree of treatment required. [Pg.221]

In 1965 the Water Quahty Act established a new trend in water pollution control. It provided that the states set water quality standards in accordance with federal guidelines. If the states f ed to do so, the standards would be set by the federal government subject to a review hearing. In 1966, the Clean Water Restoration Act transferred the Feder Water Pollution Control Administration from the Department of Health, Education and Welfare to the Department of the Interior. It also gave the Interior Department the responsibility for the Oil Pollution Act. [Pg.2160]

In contrast to traditional ambient fixed station "parametric approaches to river quality evaluation for trends determination and water quality standards attainment, data from the Willamette River, Oregon, USA were used to demonstrate the value of quantitative, semi-quantitative and qualitative approaches to mechanistic assessment of river water quality. [Pg.280]

Direct discharges are discharges from point sources into surface water pursuant to a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit. NPDES permits are granted on a case-by-case basis and limit the permissible concentration of toxic constituents or conventional pollutants in effluents discharged to a waterway. These limits are generally established on the basis of the best available treatment technology and, where necessary, to protect surface water quality standards. [Pg.473]

Wastewater pretreaters that discharge water into sewer systems have new requirements. Pollutant standards for sewage sludge have been set. Toxics in the water must be identified and plans must be developed to alleviate any problems. In addition, regulators have established, and continue to establish, water-quality standards for priority toxic pollutants. [Pg.121]
