Erection methods

Vessels and related equipment can be erected in a variety of ways. Vessels are erected by means of single cranes, multiple cranes, gin poles, jacking towers, and other means. The designer of the lifting attachments should not attempt to dictate the erection method by the tyjjes of attachments that are designed for the vessel. The selection of one t) pe of attachments versus another could very well do just that.

A method statement should be prepared and agreed with the designer and a copy kept on site. This erection method statement should be prepared by the erection contractor and include a programme. Use of temporary braces, ties and ropes should be listed in the Method Statement. Erection drawings should be supplied to site where necessary. The sequence of the erection of the units should also be given. 

Requirements for any temporary works, temporary bracing and propping should be given in the Erection Method Statement (see 6.1.2). The stage when temporary bracings/supports can be removed, and the erected structure is able to accept all loadings, including wind, must be defined in the Method Statement. 

For steei members spanning over 144 feet (43.9 m), the erection methods used shaii be in accordance with 1926.756. 

Some engineers and many architects design towers that are angled longitudinally toward or away from the main span or are curved or kinked. This can be done if such a design can be justified structurally and estheticaUy, and the extra cost can be covered within the project budget. These types of towers require special erection methods.

Since the handling methods require power-driven fork-lift trucks, nearly all cold stores are now erected as single-storey buildings with the insulation in the form of factory-made panels.
