Repair, direct

Adjacent pyrimidine bases in a DNA strand form dimers with high efficiency after absorbing ultraviolet light (fig. 26.16). By contrast, purines are quite resistant to damage by ultraviolet. Pyrimidine dimers formed within an otherwise intact DNA duplex have provided a useful substrate to assay for DNA repair. These dimers can be repaired directly by enzymatic photoreactivation (fig. 26.17). The... [Pg.664]

No. Dimers can also be repaired directly by enzymatic photoreactivation. The photoreactivating enzyme binds to the DNA in the region of the dimer to form a complex that absorbs visible light and catalyzes cleavage of the covalent linkage between the components of the dimer. Photoreactivation occurs in both bacterial and mammalian cells. [Pg.476]

There are six general mechanisms of DNA repair direct repair (DR), nucleotide excision repair (NER), base excision repair (BER), mismatch repair (MMR), homologous recombination repair (HRR), and non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). [Pg.443]

Base-excision repair requires the recognition and removal of inappropriate bases such as uracil, hypoxanthine, and xanthine from DNA. The DNA glycosylases are enzymes that remove the aberrant base by cleaving the N-glycosyl bond. Direct repair is different than the other repair mechanism in that the mutated base is repaired directly, without removal of the nucleotide. The protein 06-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase, for example, carries our direct repair. [Pg.658]

Standard articulated robots consist of six axes. They are available on the market in a large variety of types and variants. Characterized by a cyhndrical working area occupying a relatively small volume, articulated robots easily allow failures to be repaired directly. Articulated robots are used primarily for spot welding, material handling, and painting as well as machining. [Pg.374]

The oxidation of proteins is a natural part of aerobic life. Various free radicals, and reactive oxygen species generated as by-products of cellular metabolism, or from environmental sources, can modify the amino acids of proteins, leading to their inactivation. The majority of these modified proteins are either repaired directly, or removed by selective proteolysis. Mammalian cells contain only limited direct repair mechanisms for oxidized proteins. The two most widely studied proteolytic systems to remove oxidatively damaged proteins are the proteasome and the Lon protease. [Pg.89]

Biomaterials for Cardiovascular Devices. Perhaps the most advanced field of biomaterials is that for cardiovascular devices. For several decades bodily parts have been replaced or repaired by direct substitution using natural tissue or selected synthetic materials. The development of implantable-grade synthetic polymers, such as siHcones and polyurethanes, has made possible the development of advanced cardiac assist devices (see... [Pg.181]

The manufacturing cost consists of direct, indirect, distribution, and fixed costs. Direct costs are raw materials, operating labor, production supervision, utihties, suppHes, repair, and maintenance. Typical indirect costs include payroll overhead, quaHty control, storage, royalties, and plant overhead, eg, safety, protection, personnel, services, yard, waste, environmental control, and other plant categories. However, environmental control costs are frequendy set up as a separate account and calculated direcdy. The principal distribution costs are packaging and shipping. Fixed costs, which are insensitive to production level, include depreciation, property taxes, rents, insurance, and, in some cases, interest expense. [Pg.444]

Annual plant maintenance and repair costs average about 6% of the fixed capital iavestment, but should be calculated directly from person—hour per shift data or estimates. The annual cost for suppHes can be taken as 15% of the total maintenance and repair cost. [Pg.445]

Miscellaneous Direct Costs Estimates for the cost of maintenance and repairs, operating supplies, royalties, and patents are best based on company records for similar processes. A rough average value for the annual cost of maintenance is 6 percent of the capital cost of the plant. This percentage can vaiy from 2 to 10 percent, depending on the severity of plant operation. Approximately half of the maintenance costs are for materials and half for labor. Royalty and patents costs are in the order of 1 to 5 percent of the sales price of the product. [Pg.855]

Many organizations fail to appreciate the scale of their quality failures and employ financial systems which neglect to quantify and record the true costs. In many cases, the failures are often costs that are logged as overheads . Quality failure costs represent a direct loss of profit Organizations may have financial systems to recognize scrap, inspection, repair and test, but these only represent the tip of the iceberg as illustrated in Figure 1.7. [Pg.9]

The resins have also found use in a number of other directions. The use of the resins in floorings and road surfacings is somewhat spectacular. In spite of the high initial cost, such floorings have excellent chemical resistance and resistance to wear. The resins are claimed to be of particular value at road junctions and roundabouts, where severe wear is experienced, but where repairs and maintenance operations need to be kept to a minimum because of the resultant disruption in the flow of traffic. [Pg.776]

Sev eral months before the accident, reactor 5 in the series was found to be leaking. Inspection showed a vertical crack in its stainless steel. It was removed for repairs, but it was decided to continue operation by connecting reactor 4 directly to reactor 6 in the series. The loss of the reactor reduced the yield but production continued with unreacted cyclohexane being separated and recycled at a later stage. [Pg.250]

The company concerned normally used slip-plates to isolate equipment under repair. On this occasion, no slip-plate was fitted because it was only a steam line. However, steam and other service lines in plant areas are easily contaminated by process materials, especially when there is a direct connection to process equipment. In these cases, the equipment under repair should be positively isolated by slip-plating or disconnection before maintenance. [Pg.6]

Plants are particularly vulnerable to human error during shutdowns for repair and maintenance. Tfiis is partly due to the higher level of direct human involvement with the plant, when errors are likely if procedures and supervisory systems are poor. Errors also occur during high stress situations such as emergency shutdowns. Workers need to be trained in how to handle these situations so that less stress is experienced (see Chapter 3). [Pg.23]

The data are very comprehensive with direct applications to reliability, risk, and event analysis of nuclear power plants. Information has been assembled on failure frequency, modes, repairs, and maintenance. Rate Information is based on demands calculated. The time period covered varies from the early 1970 s to the present. Using real time access, the output format if the event can be varied by selection of 20 generic and detailed categories. [Pg.65]

An ab initio HF calculation with a minimum basis set is rarely able to give more than a qualitative picture of the MOs, it is of very limited value for predicting quantitative features. Introduction of the ZDO approximation decreases the quality of the (already poor) wave function, i.e. a direct employment of the above NDDO/INDO/CNDO schemes is not useful. To repair the deficiencies due to the approximations, parameters are introduced in place of some or all of the integrals. [Pg.84]
