In the category of industrial applications, nylon is the predominant fiber used in the carcass of bias truck, racing car, and airplane tires because of its excellent strength, adhesion to mbber, and fatigue resistance. Nylon is used less in the carcass of radial tires for automobiles and in replacement bias and bias-belted tires because of the development of temporary fiat spots. For this reason, nylon has lost most of this market to polyester. [Pg.261]

As made, nylon-6 contains up to ten weight percent of lactam monomer that has to be extracted for most applications. Nylons made from larger lactam rings contain only about one peicent monomer. [Pg.1333]

Problem 5.10 For some applications nylon-6,6 produced by polycondensation of equimolar mixture of hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid is diflScult to process if its M exceeds 20,000. How much of acetic acid per mol of adipic acid should be added so that M does not exceed this value Use both the approaches I and II for the calculation. [Pg.345]

Nylons are used in applications requiring durability, toughness, chemical inertness, electrical insulating properties, abrasion and low frictional resistance, and self-lubricating properties. Table 15.13 lists markets and typical applications of nylons. In many of these applications, nylons are used as small parts or elements in subassemblies of the finished commercial article. [Pg.441]

MAJOR APPLICATIONS Nylon 4,6 is often blended with glass fiber or polytetrafluoroethylene md is used in underhood automotive parts, gears, electrical parts, and bearings. [Pg.177]

Except for fiber production, commercial polyamides are produced in the form of chips for use in molding, composite, resin compounding, and numerous industrial applications. Nylon-... [Pg.122]

Nylon is the most widely used engineering thermoplastic and yields also excellent fibres. It is tough, strong, and abrasion resistant Six types are used in engineering applications nylon 6.6 (see Structure DO, i lon 6.10 and nylon 6.12 together with ... [Pg.39]

Vitchuli et al. [174] used the combined technologies to prepare a multifunctional ZnO/nylon-6 nanofiber mat with antibacterial and detoxifying properties for use in protective applications. Nylon-6 polymer solution and a ZnO NP dispersion were loaded into two separate syringes and placed side-by-side on a two-syringe pump. In the resulting material, ZnO particles were attached to the nanofiber surface and were distributed throughout the entire mat. [Pg.122]

The material is widely used for bristles in industrial and domestic bmshes, and for many textile applications. High tenacity and good elasticity are utilized in nylon rope, thread, and cord. Good resistance to abrasion and chemical attack is utiUzed in belting and filter cloth applications. Nylon fibers are also widely used as tire cord (nylon 6 and nylon 6/6), apparel, and carpets (nylon 6/6). The ability to give nylon a permanent set by an annealing process at about 100°C has been utilized in the production of permanently pleated garments as well as in preshaped hosiery. [Pg.374]

Nylon coating powders are available for both electrostatic spray and fiuidized-bed application. Nylon coatings are very tough, resistant to scratching... [Pg.1343]

Wire and Cable Coating. Nylons are widely used for wire covering and sheathing cable. In the latter application, nylon is usually overcoated onto insulation of another material, such as PVC, in order to provide cut and abrasion resistance. In a specialized application, nylon-11 and nylon-12 are used to provide... [Pg.5919]

Applications.—Nylon 6 properties have been reviewed > and design and moulding discussed with basic matmal handling precautions. The properties of nylon 6 modified with Izocyn T-IOO has been evaluated and thermal properties were found to deteriorate but improvements were observed in mechanical and electrical properties. Studies on nylon 6 as seals have been reported, as have polyamide resins for paint products. ... [Pg.101]

A variety of polyamide (nylon) nanocomposites have been developed and many of diese now have practical applications. Nylon-clay nanocomposite materials containing small amounts of clay minerals exhibit high performance and robust gas barrier properties and have attracted attention worldwide from major chemical manufacturing companies in this field. There are a number of expected applications ... [Pg.26]
