Section 23.1 The metallic elements are extracted from tile lithosphere, the uppermost solid portion of our planet. Metallic elements occur in nature in minerals, which are solid inorganic substances formd in various deposits, or ores. The desired components of an ore must be separated from the undesired components, called gangue. Metallurgy is concerned with obtaining metals from these sources and with understanding and modifying tiie properties of metals. [Pg.943]

Chemical properties of deposited monolayers have been studied in various ways. The degree of ionization of a substituted coumarin film deposited on quartz was determined as a function of the pH of a solution in contact with the film, from which comparison with Gouy-Chapman theory (see Section V-2) could be made [151]. Several studies have been made of the UV-induced polymerization of monolayers (as well as of multilayers) of diacetylene amphiphiles (see Refs. 168, 169). Excitation energy transfer has been observed in a mixed monolayer of donor and acceptor molecules in stearic acid [170]. Electrical properties have been of interest, particularly the possibility that a suitably asymmetric film might be a unidirectional conductor, that is, a rectifier (see Refs. 171, 172). Indium chemicals and electroplated metal deposits ate replacing mercury (qv) in the manufacture of alkaline batteries (qv). Indium, like mercury, functions to reduce outgassing within the battery and promotes the uniform corrosion of the anode and cathode while the battery is under electrical load. Indium inorganic chemicals also find use as catalysts in various chemical processes. [Pg.81]

Tar sand deposits are widely distributed throughout the world (Fig. 2) (5,6) and the various deposits have been described as belonging to two types stratigraphic traps and stmctural traps (Table 2 Fig. 3) (7). However, there are the inevitable gradations and combinations of these two types of deposits, and thus a broad pattern of deposit entrapment is beheved to exist. In general terms, the entrapment character of the very large tar sand deposits involves a combination of both stratigraphic and stmctural traps. [Pg.352]

Asphalt (bitumen) also occurs in various oil sand (also called tar sand) deposits which occur widely scattered through the world (17) and the bitumen is available by means of various extraction technologies. Bastnasite has been identified in various locations on several continents. The largest recognized deposit occurs mixed with monazite and iron ores in a complex mineralization at Baiyunebo in Inner MongoHa, China. The mineral is obtained as a by-product of the iron ore mining. The other commercially viable bastnasite source is the Mountain Pass, California deposit where the average Ln oxide content of the ore is ca 9%. This U.S. deposit is the only resource in the world that is minded solely for its content of cerium and other lanthanides. [Pg.365]

In a study of the adsorption of soap and several synthetic surfactants on a variety of textile fibers, it was found that cotton and nylon adsorbed less surfactant than wool under comparable conditions (59). Among the various surfactants, the cationic types were adsorbed to the greatest extent, whereas nonionic types were adsorbed least. The adsorption of nonionic surfactants decreased with increasing length of the polyoxyethylene chain. When soaps were adsorbed, the fatty acid and the aLkaU behaved more or less independently just as they did when adsorbed on carbon. The adsorption of sodium oleate by cotton has been shown independently to result in the deposition of acid soap (a composition intermediate between the free fatty acid and the sodium salt), if no heavy-metal ions are present in the system (60). In hard water, the adsorbate has large proportions of lime soap. [Pg.532]

Another problem in the construction of tlrese devices, is that materials which do not play a direct part in the operation of the microchip must be introduced to ensure electrical contact between the elecuonic components, and to reduce the possibility of chemical interactions between the device components. The introduction of such materials usually requires an annealing phase in the construction of die device at a temperature as high as 600 K. As a result it is also most probable, especially in the case of the aluminium-silicon interface, that thin films of oxide exist between the various deposited films. Such a layer will act as a banier to inter-diffusion between the layers, and the transport of atoms from one layer to the next will be less than would be indicated by the chemical potential driving force. At pinholes in the AI2O3 layer, aluminium metal can reduce SiOa at isolated spots, and form the pits into the silicon which were observed in early devices. The introduction of a tlrin layer of platinum silicide between the silicon and aluminium layers reduces the pit formation. However, aluminium has a strong affinity for platinum, and so a layer of clrromium is placed between the silicide and aluminium to reduce the invasive interaction of aluminium. [Pg.220]

Acid deposition and the alteration of the pH of aquatic systems has led to the acidification of lakes and ponds in various locations in the world. Low-pH conditions result in lakes which contain no fish species. [Pg.121]

An alternate form of catalyst is pellets. The pellets are available in various diameters or extruded forms. The pellets can have an aluminum oxide coating with a noble metal deposited as the catalyst. The beads are placed in a tray or bed and have a depth of anywhere from 6 to 10 inches. The larger the bead (1/4 inch versus 1/8 inch) the less the pressure drop through the catalyst bed. However, the larger the bead, the less surface area is present in the same volume which translates to less destruction efficiency. Higher pressure drop translates into higher horsepower required for the oxidation system. The noble metal monoliths have a relatively low pressure drop and are typically more expensive than the pellets for the same application. [Pg.480]

The ability of C to catenate (i.e. to form bonds to itself in compounds) is nowhere better illustrated than in the compounds it forms with H. Hydrocarbons occur in great variety in petroleum deposits and elsewhere, and form various homologous series in which the C atoms are linked into chains, branched chains and rings. The study of these compounds and their derivatives forms the subject of organic chemistry and is fully discussed in the many textbooks and treatises on that subject. The matter is further considered on p. 374 in relation to the much smaller ability of other Group 14 elements to form such catenated compounds. Sulfur is a reactive, nonmetallic element naturally found in nature in a free or combined state. Large deposits of elemental sulfur are found in various parts of the world, with some of the largest being along the coastal plains of Louisiana. In its combined form, sulfur is naturally present in sulfide ores of metals such as iron, zinc, copper, and lead. It is also a constituent of natural gas and refinery gas streams in the form of hydrogen sulfide. Different processes have been developed for obtaining sulfur and sulfuric acid from these three sources. [Pg.114]

Lead is not generally attacked rapidly by salt solutions (especially the salts of the acids to which it is resistant). The action of nitrates and salts such as potassium and sodium chloride may be rapid. In potassium chloride the corrosion rate increases with concentration to a maximum in 0.05m solution, decreases with a higher concentration, and increases again in 2m solution. Only loosely adherent deposits are formed. In potassium bromide adherent deposits are formed, and the corrosion rate increases with concentration. The attack in potassium iodide is slow in concentrations up to 0.1m but in concentrated solutions rapid attack occurs, probably owing to the formation of soluble KPblj. In dilute potassium nitrate solutions (0.001 m and below) the corrosion product is yellow and is probably a mixture of Pb(OH)2 and PbO, which is poorly adherent.
